A Boma salad recipe for the popular Papaya, Avocado, and Grapefruit salad:
Boma, one of the restaurants located at Animal Kingdom Lodge, is a fantastic buffet for both breakfast and dinner with a variety of interesting foods. While most times at a buffet I might be inclined to skip the salad bar, I implore you – do not make this mistake at Boma!
It’s more than just your typical salad bar (if you’re thinking greens available with toppings like tomato, cheese, croutons, etc). They have a number of pre-mixed salads which are quite tasty. The soups are fantastic too. I think I could probably just try all the soups and salads at Boma for dinner and still feel like it was worth it.
One of the highlights for me in the salad section is a fruit salad. Because Boma focuses on African flavors, they use some fruits that are not the ones you might normally expect (no strawberries or melon here!). Instead, you have a delicious combination of papaya, avocado, and grapefruit.
I could eat a lot of this when I visit Boma, but there’s so many things to try I usually only have a few bites. But the good news is, now that I have this Boma salad recipe I can make it at home – and eat as much as I want!
Honestly, I could eat this any time of year, but it’s a great option for a summer salad. If you’re heading to any parties or barbecues this summer and bringing a dish, try this one. It’s something a little different and really enjoyable!
What is the best way to cut papaya?
A papaya is a tasty fruit, but one that I don’t use on a regular basis! To prepare the papaya for this recipe, you will want to peel it first, and then cut it in half. There are a lot of seeds in the center, so scoop those out. Take the remaining papaya flesh – for this recipe, you’ll be cutting it into cubes.
What if I can’t find papaya?
Of course it should go without saying, but if you don’t manage to get a papaya then you won’t really have a papaya, avocado, and grapefruit salad! Papaya is a pretty unique flavor. However, if you want to try making it with something else, here are my suggestions:
- Cantaloupe – for a similar texture and taste (this would be my top choice)
- Mango – for a sweeter salad
- Pear – for a similar flavor, but different texture
- Honeydew – for a similar texture but slightly less sweetness
Can I use dried mint instead of fresh?
No, I would not recommend that for this recipe. This is a pretty simple salad, so each ingredient really adds to it. You definitely won’t get the same flavor profile if you use dried mint, and it will undermine the freshness of the salad.
Do you have any other Boma salad recipes?
Not yet, but I definitely want to try making more of them (I’m eyeing up the couscous and shrimp salad, or the apple and jicama salad). But if this sort of thing is to your taste, I do have other recipes you might enjoy, including the curried chicken salad from Wild Africa Trek, the tropical salad from Ohana, African Stew from the Mara, Peri Peri Salmon from Tusker House, and the infamous Sanaa bread service.
