In my quest to recreate many of the dishes from ‘Ohana, I put together this ‘Ohana salad recipe! While the salad isn’t usually the highlight of the meal at ‘Ohana (you want to leave room for all of that meat and dessert!), it’s a good tropical salad and quite delicious and easy to make at home.
So far I’e made a number of the appetizers served at Ohana – you can find recipes for the honey coriander wings, stir-fry noodles and vegetables, and Ohana dumplings (and if you’re looking a drink to complement your meal, check out my Lapu Lapu recipe!).
The salad on ‘Ohana’s menu has gone through a number of changes throughout the years. The items in the salad often vary (I remember an earlier version with passion fruit pieces in it which I really liked). And a few years ago they changed the dressing, much to the dismay of some fans. It was previously a honey lime dressing, but it’s now Lilikoi dressing, which is POG (passion fruit, orange, and guava) based.
I personally LOVE the new salad dressing. When I made this salad at home I had it for lunch all week and it’s probably one of the best salad dressings I’ve ever had. Combined with the current toppings I think it’s fantastic.
You can make this salad to share as an appetizer or side dish at home, or you can do what I did and make a big batch to enjoy all week!
‘Ohana salad recipe:
Ingredients:
For the lilioki salad dressing:
- 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
- 1 small garlic clove
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon honey
- pinch of salt
- 3/4 cup of canola oil
- 1/3 cup POG juice (even combination of orange juice, guava nectar, and passion fruit puree)
For the salad:
- Mixed greens
- Chow mein noodles (I used La Choy)
- mandarin orange slices
- dried cranberries
Directions:
- To make the salad dressing: combine the vinegar, garlic, lemon juice, worchestershire sauce, dijon mustard, honey, and salt in a blender and mix well. Add in the canola oil and POG juice and puree until smooth. Dressing can last up to 1-2 weeks in the refrigerators.
- To assemble the salad: start with a base of mixed greens and add in chow mein noodles, mandarin orange slices, and dried cranberries. Top with lilikoi dressing and enjoy!
