Below I’m sharing how we put together our Inside Out Halloween costumes!
Jason is a pretty good sport to put up with all of my Disney inspired Halloween costumes every year. He’s been Flynn Rider, Mr. Incredible, and Wreck-It Ralph. I keep telling him we could do a non-Disney costume but he never has any ideas, so back to Disney it is! Especially since we attended Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party this year.
Inside Out has quickly become one of my favorite movies, and when I found a Joy dress in my size on clearance at Hot Topic I knew I had to buy it to use someday. Surprisingly it wasn’t too hard to convince Jason to join me on the Inside Out theme! He picked Fear as his character because he’s tall and skinny. Of course he’s not really afraid of anything but he had a lot of fun pretending.
Maybe someday we can find people to be Sadness, Anger, and Disgust with us, but for now let’s take a look at how we put together our Inside Out Halloween costumes!

Joy Halloween costume
I was able to find a Joy cosplay dress at Hot Topic – in my size and on the sale rack, no less. This was back in March, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to get it and hold on to it for the future! It seems to go in and out of stock on Hot Topic, but if you can’t find it I would also recommend a simple yellow dress like this one from Amazon (you could use fabric paint to add flowers if you wanted too!).
Really the only other part I needed to complete the Joy look was blue hair! I took what I thought was a little bit of a risk at the time by ordering a really cheap wig off of Amazon. For less than $20, I thought it would look horrible. But it actually ended up being perfect! And for me, that was all I needed. Joy was complete, easily recognizable, and a nice and light costume for the heat in Florida!
Fear Halloween costume
Hubby’s costume was slightly more complicated. We started with pants and a shirt. He found a basic blue striped shirt at Target – long sleeved, even though I told him if he wanted to “cheat” and do short sleeves because of the heat he could. It’s hard to tell in the movie exactly what color Fear’s pants are, but because he himself is purple I thought dark purple pants would be the most fun. And I just happened to have some! They were women’s pants, but Jason actually fit into them so we were set. You could easily just use black slacks if you have them, but Jason was dedicated.
One of the biggest details was the (sweater)vest that Fear wears. We did a lot of searching but didn’t find quite the perfect item within our budget. However, I thought that this checkered vest worked pretty well. If you want to go all out and get the houndstooth vest for a little more money, Amazon has it here. The finishing touch to the look was a red bow tie.
We opted not to do anything with his hair or skin. The idea of purple face paint would have been a bit much, especially with the Florida heat!
I’m super pleased with how our Inside Out Halloween costumes came out, and I’m excited that we could wear them early this year and hopefully a couple more times in the future for some Halloween parties!
