Mixology on the Disney Fantasy

All about Mixology on the Disney Fantasy:

Mixology on the Disney Fantasy - Disney in your Day

I’m a sucker for a drink seminar on Disney Cruise Line. After all, I get to enjoy some beverages while learning about them. What could be better?

Mixology is always a popular one, and I had tried it before on the Disney Magic. It varies a lot depending on the ship you are on (and the bartender you have running the class), so it seemed like a good idea to try again.

You can find Mixology on Disney Cruise Line on all of their ships, usually multiple times per sailing. The location may vary for each one, but for our Mixology class we were at Meridian. This is a pretty space with lots of views outside.

All of the drinks were completely different than the ones we tried during Mixology on the magic, so that was a big positive. The one downside is that when we had done Mixology before, it was a bit more “hands on” – you actually got to do a good bit of the mixing yourself. This time it was mostly pre-made drinks, and they talked us through the art of mixology and the approach for each one.

Our instructor for this one, Marco, was very good and really funny, and we had a great time. We tried five different drinks.

The first one we tried seemed like it was just champagne at first, but it was in fact a mixed drink. The other flavors were subtle, but noticeable once you tried to discern what they were. It turned out to be a cocktail called the Elderbubble, which is served at the champagne bar Ooh La La. In addition to Prosecco, it had St. Germain and Absolut raspberry.

Up next was tequila. This was a little surprising since it wasn’t a mixed drink, but it was a good opportunity to talk about what alcohol is like before you mix it into a cocktail, and how the other flavors you use can really affect its taste. We sipped this tequila, which was Patron Anejo, and tried a sip with an orange slice after. Once we experienced that we tried another sip but had cinnamon after so you could really taste the difference.

We then moved on to another cocktail, which was called the Caribbean Green Tea. This was a good lesson in the difference between a cocktail that is shaken or stirred, and how different it can taste based on which approach you use). This drink contained peach schnapps, Jamieson, lemon juice, Agave, and club soda. It was pretty good, but a bit sweet for my tastes.

My favorite turned out to be what he called drink #3 (I guess the tequila didn’t count as a cocktail). It was an old fashioned, but this one was made with rum zacapa (an aged rum) rather than bourbon. He added a filthy cherry, chocolate bitters, and bourbon smoked sugar. It was a fun twist on an Old Fashioned. While it was a bit sweeter than a typical one, it still captured the vibe of an Old Fashioned.

We ended with a bit of “dessert” – the toasted almond martini. This had Khalua, Bailey’s amaretto, and disaronno. This was our opportunity to learn about garnishes and making drinks look pretty! We had some options in front of us and were able to add a coffee bean, star anise, and some cinnamon. It was pretty good but the almond flavor was definitely strong, and that’s not necessarily my favorite. I still enjoyed it though!

All in all I enjoyed the Mixology class and it was a fun time, but I think I liked the tequila and margarita tasting more. This one was not quite as educational, and some of the drinks were a little sweet for my tastes. But I’m still glad I did it!
