For long time readers of the blog, you may know that Pixar’s Soul is one of my absolute favorite movies. I’m a little bit picky when it comes to the merchandise though – the part of Soul that I connected with was the themes of the movie and the music (while I love the cat and 22, Joe’s whole story is really what resonated with me). So I was thrilled to see that Tervis not only offered some Soul mugs, they had a really cool and subtle design too!
This Half Note Jazz Club mug is all muted colors in gray, black, and white. I really like this approach because it seems fitting for both that aspect of the movie and for someone who wants to share their love of Disney and Pixar in a less obvious way. If you didn’t know the movie you could think the Half Note Jazz Club was a real place! (I wish it was). I’m also a big music lover so I really like the focus on the piano and the keys around the edge of the mug.
I’ve been using this mug to bring my coffee to work in the mornings, and one thing I really appreciate is the quality of the Tervis travel mugs. They advertise that they keep beverages hot for up to 8 hours, and while I haven’t had my coffee last quite that long it legitimately is still hot from about 8am until noon. As a children’s librarian my job can be very on the go and I don’t always get time to sit for that long, so it can take me awhile to get through my morning coffee. I used to have to heat it up repeatedly but now with this Tervis mug I actually don’t have to. One less thing to worry about!
What’s in my mug: It’s November, so I’m still working on my fall coffee! I know some people are inclined to jump into Christmas as soon as Halloween ends, but I love fall and Thanksgiving, so I’m still all about this fall coffee before I get into the peppermint! I got the fall pack from Joffrey’s which sells coffee in the Disney parks. The one I’m currently working on is the “Happy Harvest Blend” which is a pleasant brew that feels like fall. It’s not overt in the way a pumpkin spice or apple flavored coffee is, but I really enjoy it.
What I’m currently reading: I’ve basically been eager to get my hands on anything about Soul that I can, so when I heard that there was an “Art of Soul” book I decided to splurge for it. In particular I was very curious about how they developed the whole concept of the Soul world and what the souls would look like. And there’s a ton of great concept art and writing about that. But I’m also really enjoying seeing how the artwork was done for the “human” world. There are so many influences from African American art, and watching jazz performers and how they moved and looked. The whole thing is really fascinating. It’s mostly visuals with some brief descriptions and it’s an absolutely gorgeous book. If you enjoyed Soul at all I would highly recommend it.
