A look at our experience attending the D23 A Goofy Movie event:
This year marks the 30th anniversary of A Goofy Movie, and D23 is hosting a special event with stops around the country. This interactive screening of the film will come to a number of different states and locations, and if you get the chance to try it I highly recommend it!
We attended the May 18th screening in the Philadelphia area, which was held at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. This is a suburb of Philadelphia, and only about half an hour from me.
I purchased two tickets when they went on sale, figuring I would find someone to join me. And happily my friend Hannah was available, as she is an even bigger fan of A Goofy Movie than I am! And she’s always down with a theme, getting dressed up, and anything fun and interactive. Which turned out to be everything this event was about!
Tickets & what’s included
Tickets went on sale a month or two ago, but some locations still have availability. You do have to be a D23 member to purchase, but that includes being a general member – which is free to join! Pricing varies based on membership type. A member can buy up to 4 tickets for guests as well.
Arrival
The official time listed when I purchased the tickets was 3:30pm, but an email came a few days before with more details. They said that check in would start at 3pm, and there was a pre-show running from 3-4pm. Then the movie would officially start at 4.
We got there and parked right around 3pm, and that felt like perfect timing. I knew we were in the right place when we looked around and almost everyone had A Goofy Movie or Powerline shirts!
We waited in a line to check in, but it wasn’t too long. When we checked in, we were presented with our Powerline “concert ticket” with lanyard. This was a fun way to tell who had admission – much more fun and in-theme than something like a wristband.
In the theater lobby a photo op was set up with Powerline. Of course we took some photos! Then we were able to enter the theater and grab seats. The concession stand was open, so we returned for that after picking out a spot.
As we entered the theater we were presented with our “luggage” for the trip. This was a D23 bag that had a number of goodies inside – a number of them used during interactive parts of the show. More on that later!
The pre-show
We got into the theater and to our seats around 3:25pm, so I’m not sure what they were doing for the first 20 or so minutes of the pre-show. But there was a live host named Justin who was great. He was fun, excited, and got everyone hyped. They showed some of the original trailers for the movie and then played a trivia game.
5 people from the audience were selected to come up and answer trivia questions all about A Goofy Movie (Hannah should have been picked as she knew most of them!). We then got a preview of the documentary, Not Just a Goof, which is on Disney+.
Finally, with about 10 minutes before showtime, Justin returned to walk us through the bags we had received and how the interactive parts of the movie would work.
D23 A Goofy Movie goodie bag
The bags we received had a mix of commemorative souvenirs and items we would use during the screening. It included:
- A Goofy Movie 30th anniversary pin
- Lester’s Possum Park pennant
- A Goofy Movie sunglasses
- Goofy road map + stickers
- Glow stick
Interactive screening of A Goofy Movie
We were given some basic instructions about how the interactive movie would work. There were a few words or phrases that required audience response (booing Pete, or saying “oooh” when Roxanne’s name was mentioned, for instance).
Some of the items in our bag were also used, such as holding up the glow sticks during the concert or putting on your sunglasses when Max does.
Finally, Justin encouraged us to just be goofy and have fun! Say the lines along if you know them, sing the songs, get up and dance. The map had certain parts marked on it, and when we got to those scenes we were supposed to add a sticker to our map.
The movie started and it was a ton of fun watching it with other fans. In addition to the interactive instructions we got before the film started, there were a few surprises that occurred as well. Other items were handed out at various points, or “inflatables” made a fun appearance in select scenes.
I thought it was a great audience. They had a ton of fun singing and saying some of the words, plus reacting, but no one was obnoxious about it or anything. At the end they invited anyone who knew the dance moves to I2I to get up and do them. Sadly I did not know them, or else I would have been dancing!

All in all, I had a great time at the D23 A Goofy Movie event! They did a fantastic job making it interactive and special. I really hope D23 does more events like this around the country. They have some great offerings but many are only in California or Florida. Being able to do something a little closer to home was wonderful!
