It’s the final round of the Marvel Superheroes tournament, and only two remain…
While there were a couple of surprises along the way in how the voting went, I think we ended up with 2 solid choices for the best Marvel superhero. I know it most likely would have come down to Captain America and Iron Man if I had arranged the bracket differently, but that’s been talked about a lot. So I think this match up is a little more interesting!
One of my all-time favorite superheroes is still in the running (which doesn’t happen often during these tournaments!).
Though the ladies of Marvel put in a good effort, they ultimately didn’t make it to the final round. In all fairness, I think a lot of that has to do with exposure and how well we “know” these characters, rather than who might truly be better.
Captain America bested his counterpart Captain Carter. And to be fair, Captain Carter is a “What If?” superhero, so she’s kind of an outlier anyway. But she’s still awesome. And Black Panther (T’Challa) won up against his sister Shuri. Out of the two Black Panther movies, T’Challa got the superior film in terms of quality, so that doesn’t surprise me either.
But now I think we’ve got a pretty interesting match-up! What happens when Captain America goes up against Black Panther? While they may at first glance seem like very different superheroes, there are actually a lot of similarities here. Both were granted their powers through some sort of substance. For Cap, it’s the super soldier serum. For T’Challa, it’s the herb.
They are both incredibly strong, and in terms of just combat they are probably pretty equal matches. Their strength is also amplified by vibranium – for Captain America it’s his shield, and for Black Panther it’s his suit. And, arguably more importantly, both seem to be genuinely selfless people who fight for what they believe is right. They put others before themselves and make some big sacrifices.
And yet despite all of these similarities, we still see the two at odds in Captain America: Civil War, where they even briefly fight each other. If you need a brief refresher from that film, T’Challa wants to avenge his father’s death, which he believes is the fault of Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier). But Bucky is Steve Rogers’ best friend, and Cap is going to defend him. Captain America’s loyalty to his friend is admirable, but so is T’Challa’s loyalty to his family.
There’s so much to think about here! Does Black Panther have the edge because his whole suit is made of vibranium, while Cap only has the shield (and vibranium itself comes from the home of the Black Panther, Wakanda). Or does the fact that Captain America has been deemed worthy to lift mjolnir carry a lot of weight? (no pun intended). Which Avenger will be victorious?
The people of Disney in your Day (you all!) have spoken, and it’s now time to vote on our final two! Will your favorite superhero win? Cast your vote now!
