March tournament – Disney sidekicks, round 3

The Disney fans have spoken – and we are now on to round 3 of the Disney sidekicks tournament.

Some of the match-ups in this round were still runaways. Genie completely dominated over Meeko, and Pascal took a surprisingly big lead over Jiminy Cricket. Some races were really close, with Pumbaa vs. Tinkerbell coming down to just a few votes! And others have already surprised me. I really thought Heihei was going to get more votes over Flounder!

One thing I noticed while creating the tournament was that there are many more sidekicks in the modern films (or at least from the renaissance onward) than in the more classic movies. You’ll still see sidekicks in those older movies, but usually it’s only one major sidekick, like Jiminy Cricket or Tinkerbell. However, once you hit The Little Mermaid with 1989 you often have 2-3 major sidekick characters hanging out with the hero. Flounder, Sebastian, Scuttle. The Lion King sees Timon, Pumbaa, and Zazu. Even Pocahontas can’t have just one sidekick, with both Meeko and Flit by her side.

Now that we’re down to 8 sidekicks it definitely shows that the more modern ones have prevailed. This may be because the later films show off their sidekicks a bit more and give them more interesting personalities. And although several films started with 2 or 3 sidekicks in the bracket, only one movie now has more than 1 sidekick in the running, and that’s Aladdin.

The choices only get harder from here. For me personally I know it’s going to be a really tough choice between Olaf or Lumiere! And I’m not sure which way to vote on Mushu or Flounder either. They are very different characters in many ways.
