Kill, Refurb, Marry: World Showcase Counter Service Spots

March 12, 2014 by Becky 14 Comments

One of the great things about Epcot is how many counter service spots it has to grab lunch or a quick dinner.  Especially opposed to, say,  Animal Kingdom or Hollywood Studios.  But even then there are places around the World Showcase that could certainly be improved!  Here are my thoughts on this month’s Kill, Refurb, Marry topic.

Kill: Yorkshire Fish Shop

I feel like this barely counts for a counter service spot.  It only serves one thing, which is fish and chips.  Which is great and all, but if you want to try any other kinds of British food you have to have a reservation for the Rose and Crown.  I wouldn’t want to take away a counter service spot for the UK, but I’d kill this fish and chips stand and build something completely new that has some more options.  While you’re at it, how about something quick for Canada too?

Refurb:  Liberty Inn

Oh Liberty Inn.  The representation of America.  I’ve eaten here once and found no need to do so again with all the other great options in the World Showcase.   It’s just your typical food that you can get at most counter service locations – burgers, hot dogs, chicken, etc.  The space is nice though, so I would want to do a big old refurb on the menu here.  What about doing some sort of “taste of America” featuring different cuisines from around the country?  You could have gumbo from New Orleans, fried chicken from the south, something Tex-Mex, a Philly cheesesteak, Chicago style hot dog, etc.  There are so many fun options that better represent what America has to offer!

Marry:  La Cantina de San Angel

La Cantina provides a great view of the World Showcase.

It was really hard to pick a location to marry.  I’ve enjoyed a bunch of them – Katsura Grill was a close runner up.  And there are also some I haven’t even tried yet.  But in the end, La Cantina de San Angel was my winner.  The food is good, especially if you’re looking for something hearty.  But you can’t beat the location, even with La Hacienda now next door taking up a lot of space this area used to have.  And I have fantastic memories of grabbing a table right by the railing with my dad when I was 16, snacking and waiting 2 hours for Illuminations to start.  Good times at a good place.

What are your favorite and least favorite World Showcase Counter Service spots?

Interesting. The Yorkshire Fish Shop is limited, but it’s still pretty good too. I totally agree about The Liberty Inn, which is painfully dull. We’ve had good experiences at La Cantina San Angel, but I know that others don’t love it so much. I will say that the service could be better. It’s a big upgrade over the previous version, though.

I agree that the Yorkshire Fish Shop is good, but I say take what it has and really expand it. Maybe that’s more of a refurb than a kill, but there’s truly nothing in the World Showcase i would want to see gone completely! I’m glad to hear you’ve had good experiences at La Cantina too.

Liberty Inn is showing up on so many Kill and Refurb spots … deservedly so! The people have spoken!

Interesting entries! I think memories- like the one you mention about waiting w/ your dad- have a lot to do with some of our “Marry” picks. I know it did for me 🙂

I had the same thought about the fish shop — why don’t they add some traditional pub fare to the fish and chips?

I definitely like your ideas for America, right now its like the kids menu of every restaurant conveniently located by a bathroom.

Kill: Lotus Blossom. Gross food and poor dessert selection.
Refurb: Sommerfest. I like some of the food options, but wish there was a bit more selection and more seating for sure.
Marry: La Cantina de San Angel. 100% with you there! One of my fav CS in all of Disney. Love that indoor seating and the carne tacos are the bomb!

I ate at Lotus Blossom once and I can’t remember a thing about it, so it obviously didn’t make any sort of impression on me. And I’ve never been to Sommerfest so I don’t know about that one… good choices!

I really think WDW needs to do a restaurant based on ‘The Princess and the Frog’… so they could refurb Liberty Inn into Tiana’s Place. *Ü*

Totally agree! I always thought they could do something at Port Orleans Riverside, like replace Boatwright’s, but America in Epcot might be a great spot for it too!!
