How to make an Enchanted Giselle running costume

A look at how I put together my Enchanted Giselle running costume:

I’ve run the Princess 10k and half marathon for many years now, and I often try to dress as a different princess for each race. There are only so many Disney princesses though, and I’ve done a lot of them! That means I have to think a little more outside of the box. Lately I’ve been brainstorming some of the princesses which aren’t the “main” ones, as well as fun twists I can do with the popular princesses.

For this year’s 10k I went with a princess from a movie that I love – Giselle from Enchanted! It may not get as much attention since it’s (mostly) live action, but Amy Adams is great, the plot is fun, and the music is wonderful.

Plus, Giselle’s dress is pretty unique and has a lot of great details. I knew it would be a fun one to try and replicate in running form!

I’m not talented enough to actually take pieces of fabric and sew them to make a costume or anything, but I do like to try and put together bits and pieces to assemble a costume myself rather than buying one. Nothing wrong with that of course, and there’s some amazing work out there for sale! I just like the challenge and fun of crafting. And I also like to be unique. So most of what you’ll see me make starts with a base layer of a shirt/skirt/ etc. and then I add some details here and there.

Here’s how I put together my Enchanted Giselle running costume!

I started with a shirt and and a skirt to work with and added details to that. I actually had a skirt that was about the right color. It was a light blue/teal, and I had used it as part of my Cinderella running costume in the past (I haven’t actually shared that one before, so I may have to write that up soon too!). That skirt is specifically a running skirt which I purchased at an expo one year. But you can find many online and various places. I look for the ones that have shorts built in.

I looked at a few different tops on Amazon, and ordered a few to try on, and ultimately settled on this short sleeve blouse. It isn’t a running top, but it was very light and comfy so it worked well here for the 10k.

When I had the base to my costume, I needed to decorate it! Giselle actually makes her dress out of curtains, and she has what looks like a very light pink skirt underneath. To replicate that I got some light pink fabric and hand sewed it on to the skirt. The next detail was to add flowers. I bought iron-on and sew-on patches and then mostly sewed them on. A few I used safety pins when I got tired of sewing, though!

Giselle’s dress has a bow right under the bust, but I was aware that would look a bit odd with the the outfit I had created (and for running!). So I got a light blue sash and tied it high on my waist. I also safety pinned this in place.

And then for the finishing touches! It looks like Giselle has flowers or ribbons in her hair, so I used two ponytail holders that had scarves attached to them. I actually had a set of these from a previous Disneybound I had done, so I had a number of colors to choose from! I also paired this with a blue running headband I already had. Finally, I wore my light blue ombre compression socks!

I was happy with how this costume turned out, and it was comfortable to run in. I was also very pleased that people seemed to recognize who I was! I heard a few people yell out “Go Giselle!” during the race, so I knew I had done it well enough for people to realize it was from Enchanted.
