Disney mug of the month: Riviera Resort

January 24, 2023 by Becky 2 Comments

Guess what’s back?? I know it’s been awhile since I did a mug of the month post, but it’s here now making its glorious return. Hopefully consistently – as in, monthly (it is the mug of the month, after all).

I recently returned from a Disney World trip the first week in January where I stayed at the Riviera Resort for the first time. I’d visited the resort before to have both breakfast and dinner at Topolino’s Terrace, but this was my first time actually staying there. It was gorgeous and such a great experience.

Of course to commemorate my first time staying at the Riviera it seemed only appropriate to buy my “mug of the trip” there! This one is really neat, with a lot of different things going on. On the one side you have the Riviera Resort logo, which is the two R’s. The font and style are very classic and a good representation of the elegant old-school European vibe they’re going for.

On the other side you get a bit more “Disney” with Mickey and Minnie Mouse dressed in some chic outfits. They are shown wearing these outfits on other Riviera merchandise too, so I guess these are their “Riviera” clothes (though not their Topolino Terrace outfits, as those are very different at the character breakfast!).

They’re out on the balcony and clearly have a great view of the Riviera in the evening. You can see a sketch drawing of the resort, as well as the Skyliner gondolas going by and fireworks up in the sky.

But wait! Once you pour a hot beverage into this mug you find that Mickey and Minnie are now looking out at the same skyline, but it’s daytime. The sky is blue and there are some clouds in the sky. Did they pull an all-nighter out there? Or just head back in the same clothes the next day? That’s the real mystery here.

It was emphasized to me very strongly when I bought this mug that it was a color changing mug, and so should not be put into the dish washer or the microwave. I assured the cast member that I knew and I would be very careful – though it might be my husband who would need that reminder more than me! (Poor Jason – he did that to a color changing mug once so I know he won’t actually make that mistake again).

What’s in my mug: The Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary is coming to a close soon, so I’m enjoying as much of the Joffrey’s 50th blend as I can right now. Since it’s also what they have available in the hotel rooms at Disney, it reminds me of my stay at the Riviera when I drink it too.

What I’m currently reading: I didn’t photograph this one as I don’t think the cover of the book would vibe very well with the Riviera mug, but I’m in the middle of reading Gleanings: Stories from the Arc of a Scythe by Neal Shusterman. It’s related to the Arc of a Scythe series which I highly recommend if you are a fan of YA dystopian fiction – it’s the best thing I’ve read in that realm since The Hunger Games and I don’t know why it hasn’t gotten more attention. That trilogy ended, but this is a series of short stories taking place within the same universe (some about characters we know, some totally new). I’m really enjoying all the different types of stories.

What mug are you using right now? Do you have any mugs from a Disney resort?

Love it, want it. Been thinking a lot about stretching the bounds of a studio and putting a third person in that pull-down bed… >D

I definitely think you could! The studios have a decent amount of space vs. the standard rooms at a value anyway so I don’t see why not 😉
