Here’s a fun story about me – my first visit to Disney World was when I was about 9 years old, and they were celebrating the 25th anniversary of the parks. The castle had been redecorated to look like a giant pink birthday cake! It was my first ever visit (and my only one til about 7 years later), so I never really thought of the castle as anything else other than a pink cake.
I had seen pictures of Cinderella’s castle and all, but that looked boring as a 9 year old compared to what I got to see! All of my first trip photos are with that pink cake castle and I thought it was great. It wasn’t until much later that I learned that the pink cake was a bit controversial and unpopular (at least with boring adults at the time) and kind of went down in Disney history as a bit of a gaudy and unpopular move.
Now that Disney just finished celebrating their 50th anniversary celebration, they also gave a few nods to that classic 25th year with some merch based on the anniversary designs. Of course with that pink cake castle being so iconic to me, when I saw they made it as a mug, well…
I hemmed and hawed on buying it because I have so many mugs! I’m on vacation and I bought so many things already! And then my lovely friend I was traveling with purchased it, handed it to me, and said, “Happy Early Birthday.”
My birthday may have been last month, but I’m still feeling like celebrating by drinking out of this epic mug.
What’s in my mug: I’m on my last bag of the WDW 50th anniversary Joffrey’s coffee blend. I’ve really enjoyed this one so I stocked up while I could! And it’s been very good, though I’m also looking forward to trying some of Joffrey’s newer Disney inspired flavors (or seeing what they come up with next!).
What I’m currently reading: Blast from the past! I had a lot of fun looking through some older items I had from my first trip to Disney World. This “Pictorial Souvenir” was a little book I purchased on that first trip, and it’s so funny to look back it now and how much has changed (you can even see MGM Studios right on the front there). A few years ago my Mom also scanned lots of our family photos and we printed them into a photo book so I had a fun trip down memory lane looking at those too.
What mug are you using right now? Do you remember the 25th cake castle?
