If you’ve been following along with my Disneyland Half Marathon journey, you know that one of the things I did for that race was put together a running costume. Â I usually do princesses when I run the Princess races, so for this one I wanted to do one of my other favorite female characters – so I picked Esmeralda from the Hunchback of Notre Dame! Â Here’s how I went about putting together my Esmeralda running costume.
The Skirt
Esmeralda’s skirt is so iconic to her look that it was definitely the most important part of the costume. Â Etsy seller Vicky from Auntie Vicky’s Closet designed and created a gorgeous Esmeralda skirt for me – you can read more about it here, and if you’re looking for the skirt to create your own costume you can buy your own here! Â It was comfy and cute and perfect for this race.
The Shirt
This I put together myself – it was biggest part of DIY for this costume. Â I bought two tech shirts from Target – a white one and a blue one. Â I then cut off the top of the blue one so that I could attach it to the the white shirt to create Esmeralda’s look. Â The original plan was to sew them together but my sewing machine and I are not friends right now, so I ended up using hot glue, which worked fine. Â For the yellow stripes I used my silhouette machine to print evenly sized stripes onto their fabric material, which was then just ironed on to the shirt.
Headband
I wanted a thick headband to try and replicate Esmeralda’s look, so I got a pink bondi band. Â I was originally going to get a plain one but I picked out one with a small sun design on it which I thought went well.
Earring
The last iconic piece of Esmeralda’s look was an earring – if you remember from the movie she wears one large gold hoop earring. Â If you’ve already got gold hoop earrings and you have pierced ears, great – you can just wear one of them! Â For me, I unfortunately cannot wear earrings due to my allergies/sensitive earlobes! Â We happened to have a pirate kit in our costume box that came with one clip one gold earring, so I wore that. Â You can also find them on Amazon or I’m sure at costume stores during the Halloween season.
Other Items
I wore my other usual running items, but tried to get things that would match my costume. Â I bought some purple compression socks for this one, and I wore my light blue flipbelt. Â And of course I had my usual running sneakers and a light blue sports bra.
What do you think of my Esmeralda running costume? Â Which character should I be next?
Check out my other Disney running costumes too!
You are so creative! Your costume was amazing! My son absolutely loves the Hunchback of Notre Dame, so I’ve seen it about a billion times 🙂
Thanks so much! I love the fact that your son enjoys Hunchback so much – it’s not usually one of the more popular ones but it’s one of my favorites!
Super cute! I love how easy it looks, great idea 🙂
Thanks! I try not to make my running costumes too complicated – after all, they need to be simple enough that I can run 13 miles in them!
Oh my gosh, this is so cute! What a great DIY project and it turned out awesome!
Thanks so much Christina! I was very happy with how it turned out 🙂
This is so adorable!
Thanks Katie, I’m glad you like it!
You.Are.Adorable! How creative and fun!!!! I love dressing up/theme parties!
Aww thank you Chrissa! I love dressing up! We have murder mystery parties once or twice a year, and I also do theater so I get lots of excuses to put on a costume! 😉
You are so creative with these running costumes. I really like this one. Great job!
Thanks so much!
Cute!
Thanks Cori!
That is such a fun costume! I’ve never ran a marathon (or a race at all), but would love to do the Disney ones just to get to dress up! You did well, it looks great! 🙂
Haha Lisa, that’s actually why I started running at all! The Disney races looked so fun and so I decided to do a 10k one just so I could experience it and get dressed up – and then I got hooked!
Aww, good idea! I think it’s awesome that you did Esmerelda, she doesn’t get as much love as the famous princesses!
That’s what I thought too Rachel, so I was happy to represent her!
OMGOSH! That’s adorable! What a sweet idea! I really want to do one of the Disney runs, do people wear costumes for all of them?
Yes they do! Lots of costumes at all of them. Many races have a “theme” that people go along with (like princesses for the Princess half marathon, Star Wars characters for the Star Wars races, etc.), but there are tons of Disney characters from all sorts of movies at every race so whatever character you want to do would work!
This is SOO cute! And super creative, I haven’t seen many Esmerelda costumes around. I’m super impressed with your DIY skills and going to check out those skirts on etsy. =)
Aww thank you Becki! And definitely check out the esty shop – her skirts are awesome and she can custom design any character you might want. That’s how I got Esmeralda!
So so so cute!!! Love this!
Thanks Nichole! 🙂
This is so cute! I love Hunchback and you never seen Esmeralda anywhere! This is a perfect costume – makes me *almost* want to do a run (almost)
Haha! I totally agree, Hunchback does not get the love it deserves – it’s one of my favorites!
