There are a few things you should know about doing a 2020 Disney World trip, so I wanted to share them here with you.
Why you should go in 2020 – instead of 2021
The answer to why you might want to go this year instead of next year is simple – 2021 is going to be more crowded and more expensive. There is a reason for that, of course. 2021 will be the 50th anniversary of Disney World, so they are sure to attract a lot of people coming in for that. In addition, a number of new rides are expected to open in 2021, including the Tron roller coaster and the Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster. If your priorities are seeing these rides, wait until 2021. But otherwise I suggest getting there before it opens, because I can only imagine what the crowds are going to be like next year.
New attractions
Just because some things are opening in 2021 doesn’t mean everything is! 2020 will see some exciting new things. Rise of the Resistance, which many are calling Disney’s best attraction to date, just opened this December so it’s a new and exciting thing to see. Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run is also new as of August 2019. And Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be opening in 2020. Aside from rides you’ll also see some other new things. Epcot just got a new nighttime show, a space-themed restaurant is opening in Epcot sometime in 2020, the Skyliner transportation system is now open, and lots of other new and exciting things.
Resorts
2020 is a particularly great time to go if you’re thinking about staying at a value resort. Most of the value resort rooms were just recently refurbished, so everything is new and nicer than the last time you might have stayed there. I highly recommend looking into Pop Century for 2020 as it’s on the Skyliner transportation system. If you prefer a moderate resort, Caribbean Beach is a great option for the same reason – it’s also the hub of the Skyliner so you can easily use it to get to both Epcot and Hollywood Studios. Other new options to check out include the deluxe Riviera Resort, which just opened in December, or the tower at Coronado Springs, which opened this past summer and is a really nice moderate option.
Of course, if you’re not sure which resort might be right for you I’m happy to help you figure it out!
When to visit
When should you go? It depends what you’re looking for, but most people focus on lowest crowds and lowest prices. If you can swing a last minute trip I can throw one together for you, because traveling in January-mid February or March is a good time to be there. If you don’t mind the heat and potential hurricane season, August and September are the next best times.
Easter falls on April 12th this year (my birthday!), so I would avoid most of April because it will be very crowded with spring breaks. Other holidays are also traditionally busy, including MLK weekend, President’s Day weekend, and of course Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. October has been one of the busiest months the past few years and I don’t see that changing in 2020.
Why you should book now
Even if you’re thinking about going towards the end of 2020, you should still book now! Disney is a vacation where planning in advance is extremely useful. If there are certain reservations you want for your vacation you’ll have an advantage with a reservation already booked. On top of that, prices are often lower when they are first released than if you wait. They will raise prices if rooms are booked according to demand. If you wait too long you might not even get the resort you want!
