Lately one of the restaurants I’ve been missing is ‘Ohana – especially with the tropical flavors of Hawaiian and Asian fusion, it feels like the perfect food for summer. So I’ve been trying to recreate some ‘Ohana favorites in my own kitchen. So far I’ve done the honey coriander wings and stir-fry noodles. Today I’m excited to bring you the Ohana dumplings recipe!
I learned a few things while putting together this recipe. The first is that there’s really no major difference between dumplings and potstickers. From what I could gather in my research it seems like “dumpling” is the overarching terms of things like potstickers, goyza, wontons, etc. So a potsticker is a type of dumpling. I’m not an expert but I’m pretty sure that the dumplings served at ‘Ohana are actually potstickers, so that’s what I went with here.
I tried to find an official Disney recipe for the dumplings but there isn’t any out there. This generally means they don’t make that item by hand themselves – they probably purchase the dumplings frozen in bulk from somewhere else, so you can use any kind you might find at your grocery store.
Making this dish is actually pretty simple: you buy pork dumplings, toss them in garlic ginger sauce, and then cook. The real secret is in the sauces. At ‘Ohana they are served with sweet and sour sauce, peanut sauce, and more garlic ginger sauce for dipping, so I recreated all of those sauces here.
‘Ohana dumplings recipe:
Ingredients:
For the dumplings:
- Frozen pork dumplings (around 10)
For the garlic ginger sauce:
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 tablespoon ginger, minced
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
For the sweet and sour sauce:
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon red food coloring (optional)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon water
For the peanut sauce:
- 1 garlic clove
- 1/4 teaspoon Thai red curry paste
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 4 oz. peanut butter
- 1/2 oz fresh ginger, minced
- salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
- Combine all ingredients or the garlic ginger sauce in a bowl. Add dumplings to the bowl and refrigerate. Let marinate for about 30 minutes.
- While dumplings are marinating make the peanut and sweet and sour sauces.
- To make the sweet and sour sauce: combine the 1/4 cup water, white vinegar, sugar, and food coloring in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Dissolve cornstarch in 1 tablespoon of water and stir into vinegar mixture using a whisk. Cook and stir for 5 minutes, then remove from heat.
- To make the peanut sauce: In a saucepan, saute garlic for 1 minute in a small amount of oil. Stir in curry paste. Add soy sauce and bring to a simmer. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Then add remaining ingredients and continue to stir. Season with salt and pepper. For a thicker sauce stir in more peanut butter.
- Cook dumplings according to package directions.
- Serve with sweet and sour sauce, peanut sauce, and extra garlic ginger sauce. Enjoy!
Would you like to try this Ohana dumplings recipe? Which of the sauces sounds best to you?
Aaaaand now you have me craving dumplings/potstickers. My mom used to get them for me all the time when I was a kid because they made an excellent snack, or an addition to what she called a “snacky plate” lunch – which consisted of multiple smaller items. Like homemade Lunchables haha!
I am literally obsessed with food that can be dipped into different sauces! So obviously potstickers and other dumplings are one of my favorites. This looks so easy, for a quick dinner or appetizer. I am definitely going to be mixing up some dipping sauces soon!
Thanks for the post. Can’t wait to try. Where did you get your multi-sauce holder? So cute
Thank you! I got it years ago at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I don’t get the chance to use it very often but for something like this it’s perfect!
Thank you for this recipe! I wanted to recreate the Ohana dinner skillet and these were a PERFECT addition. Tasted amazing and just like I remember from our Ohana dinner a month ago!
I’m so glad you liked them and they tasted like you hoped!
