Guess what? I’ve got a new Disney Bound coming at you today! I love to share some during September and October, because I think Disney Bounding is a really fun alternative for Halloween. It’s perfect for adults who want to do something reminiscent of a Disney character without doing a full blown costume. Plus you can wear it in your day to day life, and people most likely won’t get know unless they’re “in the know.”
If you’re not familiar, Disney Bounding is a fun way to show a little of your Disney passion without being over the top obvious about it. Basically, Disney Bounding is when you dress in the color of style of a certain character, but you use your everyday clothes instead of a costume. I’ve done a number of Disney Bounds you can take a look at:
- Ursula
- Belle
- Cruella de Vil
- Disgust
- Elsa
- Anna
- Ariel
- Dory
- Snow White
- Gaston
- Minnie Mouse
- Winnie the Pooh
The Disney Bound I have to share with you today is based on a character who has really grown on me every time I’ve watched her movie – and that’s Mulan! She is a strong, courageous female figure, which is a great thing to see. We have a live action movie coming in 2020 so I’ll definitely be looking forward to seeing what they do with that. Is she considered a “Disney Princess”? Well, if you’re familiar with the movie, you know that she’s really not a princess. She doesn’t come from royalty and she doesn’t marry royalty. That being said… Disney has chosen to classify her as a Disney Princess. So make of that what you will!
Mulan wears several outfits throughout the movie, but I feel like her pink outfit is the most iconic (used the most in promos, merchandise, etc.) and the most recognizable for a Disney bound, so that’s what I went with!
In order to replicate the colors best I could, I decided to do a blue top, maroon bottom, and pink overpiece. Since I was going to be in Disney World in August while wearing this Disney Bound I knew I wanted everything to be as light as possible. Mulan’s skirt is always a little tricky to me. Depending on the TV I view it, I have a hard time telling if it’s red or a dark pink. I ended up going with a dark red sort of color. I wanted a skirt because I prefer skirts and dresses and Mulan wears a skirt, but shorts are more comfortable for the theme parks. I found these on Amazon and it actually turned out to be the perfect solution – it’s a skort, so there are shorts underneath the skirt!
I picked a solid blue tank top in about the shade of blue that her kimono has in the movie. I chose one with lace to make it look a little more fancy, since this is her more formal outfit that she wears when she goes to meet the matchmaker. But my favorite part of this outfit is the pink kimono that went over top. The one that I’m wearing is actually a LuLaRoe Monroe. The pink color was perfect, and it’s hard to tell from the photos but it also has some black fringe. There are some cute options on Amazon (without fringe), or you could try searching Lularoe groups on facebook to find something similar. I actually have another one of these that is a slightly lighter pink with a greenish fringe (which would still go with the Mulan look because she has those mint green accents!). Since I have two I’m looking to sell that one – so hey, any interest contact me and I’ll sell for a lot less than they go for!
The last main piece of my outfit was the hair comb. This is a replica of the one that Mulan wears in the movie. I bought it from Box Lunch. It’s kind of hard to see in the photos because it’s towards the back of my head (It wouldn’t stay in otherwise!). If you look closely you might be able to spot it. When I met Mulan she did notice and complimented me on it!
For shoes I just wore my sneakers, because I wore this outfit when I did the Backstage Magic tour and we were required to wear sneakers. But you could do pretty much anything that matches with it. I think I would also add a necklace to this outfit. There are a number of directions you could go with it – a lotus blossom to match the hair comb, a Chinese symbol, or something with a dragon on it like the medal she receives at the end of the movie.
What do you think of my Mulan Disney Bound? Which character would you want to dress as?
