Kill, Refurb, Marry: Disney Princesses

May 14, 2014 by Becky 14 Comments

Uh oh.  This month’s Kill, Marry, Refurb theme is Disney Princesses – which means I’m killing, marrying, and refurbing (?) actual human beings!  The murder didn’t seem so bad when it was just a Disney ride.  I know this one will be hard, but also interesting.  I love the princesses, many of them.  For this I’m going to consider both how the princesses are presented in their respective movies, but also their presence in the parks.  I’m also only including the “official” princesses.  So that includes Mulan and Pocahontas, but not people like Esmeralda or Megara.

Kill – Aurora

Aurora - another classic Princess found at Akershus and Cindy's Table.

Aurora – another classic Princess found at Akershus and Cindy’s Table.

I’m sorry Aurora!  I really, really didn’t want to kill any princesses.  And I enjoy Sleeping Beauty.  But if I absolutely have to, I guess I would kill Aurora because we just don’t get to know her as well as some of the other princesses.  After all, she spends half of her movie sleeping.  I can’t think of any unique personality traits that come to mind about her, so I feel like she’s rather undeveloped as a character.  I’m sure she would be quite lovely if we got to know her, but if I’m forced to choose one to kill then the princess that does the least to stand out is Aurora.

Refurb – Jasmine

Jasmine hangs out with Aladdin in Adventureland.

I like Jasmine a lot.  But after seeing Aladdin on Broadway, I felt like there was more potential to her character than we get in the movie.  She’s one of the first spunky, independent princesses, who doesn’t want to just marry whatever man her father chooses.  I like that about her character a lot, but she seemed even more feminist in the Broadway version, and I wish that was brought out in the movie more.  Also, she happens to be the most sexualized of all the princesses due to her costume.  I’m not sure how historically accurate it is.  But I think they could have put her in something beautiful, even a little sexy, while not showing quite so much skin.  Or at least jazz up her outfit a bit more!  To me she always looked much more like a typical belly dancer than a princess.

Marry – Belle

Belle - my favorite! I have met her the most times. This is at Enchanted Tales with Belle, but also at Akershus, Cinderella's Table, and in Epcot's France.

Anyone that knows me knows that this, at least, was an easy choice.  Belle is my girl!  As a librarian, I love the fact that she adores books.  She’s also different and not afraid to be that way.  She has a big heart and doesn’t judge people based on appearances.  Her relationship with the Beast actually took some time to develop and she didn’t just fall head over heels in love at first sight.  I like to think that I’m a bit like her, and I admire her greatly.  Also, as far as Princess dresses go, I love the style of her dress and the color (I know a lot of people don’t like yellow but my favorite color is orange, so I like bright and sunny colors!) So yes, Belle can come home and be my wife!

Kill: Snow White. I know this is terrible, but I HATE Snow White and the Seven Dwarves! I think it’s super boring. I also can’t stand her voice. I’d be fine if she was done away with in the parks (though I’m super excited for the Mine Train!)

Refurb: Pocahontas. I still very vividly remember seeing this movie in theaters. It was funny and engaging. And Pocahontas wouldn’t let her future get decided for her; I love that independence. I wish she was incorporated more in the parks, either as a more developed character meet experience OR if Kali River Rapids was transformed into Pocahontas’s Just Around the Riverbend Adventure. Something!

Marry: Right there with you with Belle! She is by far my fav princess, and BATB is one of my favorite movies of all time. She is perfect!

I love reading your thoughts. I was this close to killing Snow White instead – I actually started to type it up but then decided to go with Aurora instead. I decided I couldn’t kill her just because she is the first, so that gives her a special place. It just barely saved her! And I see you on Pocahontas as well, I think she could play a much bigger part in Animal Kingdom!

Lol, interesting choices! Are you bisexual, by any chance?

I’d kill Merida or Mulan because I disapprove of them being Disney princesses.

I’d refurb Aurora and make her more prominent in culture.

And I’d marry Cinderella. She’s just amazingly kind and has a huge heart!

Haha! Though I am very open minded, I do not happen to be bisexual. But Belle is still pretty awesome! I think Cinderella would make a great wife too.

Loving your picks, Becky! Can’t complain about any of them … especially Aurora and Jasmine. They have virtually no on-screen personality. I wish they had more substance!

This is a fun game…never heard of it before. I can’t agree with you, though. I love Sleeping Beauty too much!

I have never heard of this game…very fun! I can’t say that I agree with you. I love Sleeping Beauty too much, but it could be only because she has the best songs.

I know, it’s funny because I do enjoy Sleeping Beauty as a movie. But Aurora herself I just find to be lacking in personality. Really none of the princesses are kill worthy to me though!

Oh dear… killing Disney princesses seems very blasphemous. Haha. I would have a really hard time with this, I think. My personal experience with some of them would make it even harder. Soooo, let’s just say I’d marry Princess Leia and leave it at that. LOL. She *is* a Disney princess now, right??

Haha I know! I was so torn about killing a princess 🙁 Well, Leia is a princess, and she’s owned by Disney now, so why not! She is pretty awesome!

Kill: Pocahontas. Guys, she’s supposed to be twelve! She wasn’t a princess! GAACK!!! Love the soundtrack, hate the movie.

Refurb: Aurora. She needs a little more character to go with that pretty face.

Marry: Ariel. Unless the Frozen girls count, then I’m saying Anna.
