This month’s Kill, Refurb, Marry theme is “Disney Partners.” This is pretty much open to interpretation – best friends? Villain and sidekick? Lovers? I decided to concentrate on Disney Duos, or in my mind two characters that really share close to equally sized roles in a movie but not in a romantic way. I’m thinking Woody and Buzz, Chip and Dale, Timon and Pumbaa, Sulley and Mike, Cogsworth and Lumiere, etc. Lots of good choices!
Kill – Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket
I know, two extremely iconic Disney characters. But my “kill” isn’t based just on disliking them, but also how they are together as partners. It always drove me crazy that Gephetto just sent Pinocchio off on his own after being a real boy for less than 24 hours. Jiminy is supposed to be his guide, but he doesn’t do a very good job of enforcing his conscience. Half the time he gets distracted, and poor Pinocchio falls into trouble yet again! That wooden boy definitely needs a better partner to take care of him.
Refurb – Hiro and Baymax
Baymax is an awesome character – basically the thing that makes Big Hero 6 worth watching. Hiro is a cool kid, but I think they could make him even more of a compelling character. The thing that got me while watching this movie is the fact that when all the others get super powers, Hiro’s power just seems to be “riding around on Baymax.” I think they would make an even better team if Hiro had a power of his own that he could use while flying on Baymax. Then they would be even more awesome Disney partners!
Marry – Marlin and Dory
These two are about as perfect a team as can be. They balance each other out so well – Marlin gains more trust in his life and love because of Dory’s unwavering loyalty, and Dory finds something that can (eventually) put up with her forgetfulness. And working together they manage to do what seems impossible – find Nemo. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more of these two in the sequel Finding Dory!
