Now that Disney+ has a deal with Hamilton to show the live stage version on their channel, I think it qualifies as something I can write about on my blog! And that’s pretty great because I’ve been obsessed with Hamilton (like everyone else) for over a year now. It’s so clever, and brilliant, that I’m able to list out so many Hamilton quotes that I love for a post like this!
I resisted listening to Hamilton for a long time. I’ve performed in local theater for years and have always been a fan of Broadway musicals, but there was that part of me that just thought I wouldn’t like it. I’m not into rap music and it was so extremely popular I was sure I’d be disappointed. Eventually I had to learn the words for “My Shot” thanks for a community theater cabaret I was performing in – this was our group song (by the way, a bunch of white people from the Philly suburbs should not be allowed to perform this song! I tried to stand in the back and not be seen…). So I bought the soundtrack, listened to the whole thing, and ended up loving it.
I realized I should be open to other genres of music. I studied English literature in college and the words that Lin Manuel Miranda writes are brilliant, like some of the best poetry I’ve ever read. Performed rhythmically with rap and hip-hop music and it’s just a work of genius.
Needless to say it was hard for me to pick just a few of my favorite Hamilton quotes. I ended up creating graphics for 10 of them and then sharing a bunch of others at the end. I hope you enjoy!
“This is not a moment, it’s a movement” – Hamilton might be about political events that happened 300 years ago, but the sentiments remain the same to the things we are dealing with right now. You can connect it to BLM and so many other things happening in our current day, and quotes like this feel powerful.
“I am the one thing in life I can control.” – This is my favorite quote from the musical, I think. I might get it as a tattoo if I can figure out a style I like. Reminding myself that I cannot control others, only myself, has been huge for my self-confidence and happiness in life.
“If you stand for nothing [Burr] what will you fall for?” – Have a passion and stand for it.
“There’s a million things I haven’t done but – just you wait.” – I still feel like I have so many things to contribute to this world.
“I’m past patiently waiting
I’m passionately smashing every expectation
Every action’s an action of creation
I’m laughing in the face of casualties and sorrow
For the first time I’m thinking past tomorrow” – I have this one on my running playlist, and when I’m having a particularly good run I like to think that I’m “passionately smashing every expectation”!
Raise a glass to freedom – something they can never take away” – At the end of the day we are still a country founded in freedom, and that’s worth celebrating and fighting for.
“look around, look around, at how lucky we are to be alive right now” – In 2020 it may not always feel this way, but I know this feeling of just having an exhilarating moment and thinking how lucky you are to be living through something like that.
“Love doesn’t discriminate
between the sinners
and the saints,
it takes and it takes and it takes
and we keep loving anyway.
We laugh and we cry
and we break
and we make our mistakes.” – Anyone who has ever loved probably knows these feelings – loving no matter what, through the laughter, tears, and mistakes.
“History has its eyes on you” – may we all remember this as important choices come up.
“When my time is up have I done enough, will they tell our story?” – I can’t help wondering, sometimes, if I am doing enough in my life to make a difference. I relate a lot to the lyrics of this song.
Other favorite Hamilton quotes:
“For once in your life, take a stand with pride
I don’t understand how you stand to the side”
“You and your words obsessed with your legacy
Your sentences border on senseless
And you are paranoid in every paragraph
How they perceive you”
“We push away what we can never understand
We push away the unimaginable”
“When all is said and all is done
Jefferson has beliefs
Burr has none”
“Dying is easy, young man, living is harder.”
“You want a revolution? I want a revelation”
“You will never be satisfied”
“Oh, let me be a part of the narrative
In the story they will write someday
Let this moment be the first chapter:
Where you decide to stay”
