Disney mug of the month: Kilimanjaro Safaris

Last updated June 24, 2025 by Becky Leave a Comment

It’s been a few months since I’ve had a mug of the month to feature, but now I’m back! I will be honest, I have gotten a lot more picky with the Disney mugs I buy. There are so many of them (and I already own a lot!), so I have to really love it to make the purchase.

I was tempted by the Princess race weekend mug back in February, but I ultimately went with a backpack instead. Most recently I was down at Disney World in May for a long weekend trip, which included a day at Animal Kingdom. I saw this mug there and I knew instantly it was a “must have” for me.

Animal Kingdom is my favorite park, and Kilimanjaro Safaris is my favorite attraction. I could ride it all day and be happy – I just love watching the animals and taking photos of them. And being the nerd that I am, I love learning about animals too. I’m listening to everything the truck driver tells me, and using that guide up top for animal spotting.

And that’s what this mug is – a replica of the animal spotting guide on the safari truck! The main difference is that the mug does not have the animals labeled. This can also make it a good guessing game or way to test your knowledge about what you remember 😉

The Kilimanjaro Safaris logo is in the center, and the text at the top says “Animals of the African Woodlands and Savannah.” Then across the entire mug you have the images of the animals, done in the same style as the artwork on the animal spotting guide.

The animals are spread across the mug and spaced out (so not in the exact same style on the truck, which is much shorter and wider). It’s all on a brown speckled background. The inside of the mug is speckled too!

Side note – at my work as a children’s librarian I’m doing a series of “art and design” workshops for middle school and high school students this summer. Each one focuses on a different topic, and last week I decided to do hand lettering with them. I had no real experience with it myself but learned some basics and played around with it. Of course I needed to practice and have a few examples, so I made this Animal Kingdom inspired “Jambo” poster!

What’s in my mug: This summer has been crazy so far in terms of weather, so I’m alternating between hot coffee and iced coffee or cold brew. I usually prefer hot coffee in the mornings, but we’ve been reaching close to 100 degrees some mornings (even here in Pennsylvania!). So on those days I switch to cold brew.

What I’m currently reading: For my birthday, my friend Kristin got me this book, Kungaloosh! I’ve only just started it, but I’m excited for this one. It covers the jungle-inspired areas of Disney, including Adventureland, Animal Kingdom, and more. It also has a good section on the Adventurers Club – something that sounds like it was amazing but I sadly did not get to experience.

What mug are you using right now? And what are you currently reading?
