How we put together some Hoop-dee-Doo disneybounds, and how I created my look featuring Claire deLune:
When Jenn, Erika, and I decided to stay at Fort Wilderness this past February, I’m not sure that we realized it meant we would be starting a lifelong love of the Hoop-dee-Doo Revue. (That’s a big claim, but I’m calling it here!).
We dressed up as the three female characters for the 10k that weekend. And we had reservations to see the show the evening after the half marathon.
Of course, we couldn’t just go see the show… we had to see it in style!
Continuing with our theme from the race, we decided to do some Hoop-dee-Doo disneybounds with the same characters we did for our costumes.
(If you’re not familiar with what Disney Bounding is, you can read about it here.)
Let me just say – this is one of the best disneybounding experiences I’ve ever had! We were seated at a table right in the front row, and the MOMENT the performers came on stage they saw what we were doing. The whole show was a blast, and I know our outfits added to it!

Claire de Lune
I was given the role of Claire de Lune. According to Jenn, I can do her laugh perfectly. The funny part is, I am not even trying – it’s just my natural laugh that is apparently a perfect fit! And I love color, so I knew that was going to be a good fit for me as well.
The dress
Claire’s dress is pretty unique, so I knew I wasn’t aiming for a perfect copy here. With disneybounding, as long as you get the general color scheme down you’re usually in good shape.
But even her color scheme is a bit unusual! She has a mostly striped dress with a purple skirt. The stripes are black with a number of other colors – but they are not rainbow stripes! Notably there is no green or orange incorporated in her dress.
I think if you can try to involve black, colored stripes in some way, and purple (no matter what the combination!) you’re on the right track.
I ended up going with a dress that was black with color block stripes in blue, red, yellow, and orange. Not perfect, but something I would wear again.
To incorporate the purple, I went with a purple cardigan. I’m a big fan of trying to use what you already have (or at least things you will use again often!).
The accessories
Any good disneybound is all about the accessories! Claire’s most distinctive accessory is probably a choker that she wears around her neck. I didn’t go full choker, but I did have a purple necklace already from my local Renaissance faire which gave similar vibes. If you were looking for something, I did find this one and this one on Amazon.
Her hair is in a bun, and she has some sort of purple ribbon. I decided to go ponytail, but I had a purple scrunchie with a ribbon that worked.
Finally, Claire does wear purple tights and black boots, but in the interest of comfort I went with a pair of Toms. I did choose the ones I own that have music notes on them – feels appropriate for the Hoop-dee-Doo Musical Revue! In retrospect, I might have added a pair of purple tights, just to have a little more of the purple in my outfit.
Flora Long & Dolly Drew disneybounds
Now, since I didn’t make these outfits myself I can’t tell you all the bits and pieces, but I can at least give you a general idea of what Jenn and Erika did! (And Jenn does share details of how she put together her Dolly Drew running costume on YouTube, which has some similar pieces!).
So Jenn took on the role of Dolly Drew. She wore bright red pants and a cute long sleeve white top – the key for the Dolly Drew look was that the top even had puffy sleeves like hers! I think the way she styled her hair really added to the look. She had a red and white tartan headband, plus she put her hair into braids with white bows.
And Erika had the cutest Flora Long disneybound! Yellow gingham is the key here. Erika actually wore a longer tank top with jeans, but any sort of yellow gingham dress or top would work. Hair accessories also complete this look, with a cute headband with yellow bow.
Other disneybounding ideas I considered
I did think about doing a purple skirt with some sort of top, instead of a dress. This black and purple striped skirt would be a fun twist on Claire’s outfit as well.
There is a tank version of the same dress that I got that could work. This top has some thinner stripes, and this one is fun.
I also considered this maxi style dress, or any sort of rainbow striped dress and then add some black and purple accents or accessories. This rainbow dress or this one are both cute. This black dress with a few thin stripes could work too, but it wasn’t my style.
Another option was to do just a black and purple outfit with a rainbow striped cardigan.
Or, a purple dress with a black cardigan that has rainbow stripes! This one is fun too, and would be great if it’s a little cooler that day.
Tips for the perfect Hoop-dee-Doo Disneybounds
- Color is probably the most important thing here, so focus on that.
- Patterns are very helpful too. Even if it’s not an exact match, any sort of gingham, plaid, or tartan in yellow or red will work for Dolly and Flora. Claire is all about the stripes!
- Hairstyle and accessories can really add to the look.
- Any sort of rustic or country fashion touches would definitely fit the Hoop-dee-Doo vibe.
- If you can get friends to join you, this is a great group disneybound!
