Old Key West 1-bedroom villa room tour

Take a look inside an Old Key West 1-bedroom villa:

I have very fond memories of staying at Old Key West because the first time I stayed there was when I completed the Dopey Challenge! So it seemed only fitting that I recently stayed here again when Jenn from Fairest Run of All and our friend Erika were doing their Dopey Challenge.

I think it’s a great spot for a race weekend (or anytime really, but especially for that!). It’s beautiful, feels very relaxing, and has the boat to Disney Springs. That boat is great if you’re taking it a bit easier and not hitting the theme parks every day. Easy access to lots of great food options, too!

The first time I stayed at Old Key West it was just Jason and myself, so we had a deluxe studio. This time around there were 4 of us sharing a room – so we went for a 1-bedroom villa!

My flight was the last one to arrive, so Jenn graciously took on the role of photographer to get me pictures for this post before it became a bit more “lived in.” That’s a true friend right there!

We were in room 6224, on the second floor of building 62. This was a fantastic location as it was right next to the Hospitality House and very conveniently located to food, the main pool, and the boat to Disney Springs.

The villas here are just lovely, and I’m excited to take you on a little tour of our Old Key West 1-bedroom villa!

The room basics

This villa can sleep up to 5 people, as it has a King-size bed, a queen-sized pull-out sofa, and twin-sized sleeper chair. The king is in the bedroom, while the living room has the sofa and twin chair. This is an advantage over some of the other 1-bedroom villas that can only sleep 4, including at Wilderness Lodge Copper Creek.

When you enter the villa there is a closet on your left, as well as a mirror. Past that you had another door which was locked off for us – but if you wanted two connecting rooms for more space I believe this connected to a deluxe studio.

Moving forward you will hit the living room and kitchen with a dining area. There is also a door to the balcony from here.

If you head left after entering you’ll get to the bedroom. There’s an additional door to the balcony here too. Unlike many other DVC 1-bedroom villas, which tend to have a very long and skinny balcony, ours was much more square. There was an additional round table with 4 chairs out here.

Our view was very pretty, looking out on the water.

Before the bedroom door, you could also turn to the right, which would take you to the washer/dryer. Just past that was one door to the bathroom (the other door to the bathroom was through the bedroom).

The kitchen

You have a full kitchen setup here, which means fridge/freezer, microwave, electric range, dish washer, coffee maker, and toaster. You are also provided with dishes, pots and pans, utensils, glasses – basically everything you might need.

This Old Key West 1-bedroom villa had a kitchen island/bar, which felt like it gave a little more space than some of the other ones I’ve been in. Over to the side was a dining table and chairs.

The living room

The living room shares a space with the kitchen – it’s a unique set-up compared to many hotel rooms, with the TV somewhat lower down. Instead of on top of a dresser or mounted on the wall, the television was on the side of the kitchen island.

There are two couches and a chair here, along with a coffee table. I really enjoyed the whole vibe in here! There are some bright colors without it being too overpowering, and the decor feels very light and welcoming.

One couch folds into a bed, as does the chair. As for the comfort of these pull-outs, I can’t tell you firsthand since I shared the king bed (my friends are quite kind and given my back pain and sleep issues they offered it to me without my even asking).

I think the impression I got from Jenn and Kate, who slept on the sofa bed and chair bed respectively, was that they were “okay” (You can read Jenn’s take on the room here). Manageable but not great. We much prefer the resorts that have switched to a pull-down bed. The big advantage of that is you don’t have the bars from the pull-out couch, which you can often feel under the thin matress. Hopefully all the resorts eventually get upgraded to the pull downs!

It also felt like a lot of space. I know the Old Key West villas are bigger than most of the other DVC properties, which is nice.

Bathroom

There is really only one bathroom in the 1-bedroom villa, but it does have two separate areas. The “main” bathroom has the toilet, shower, and a sink area. This part of the bathroom is closed off by two doors which lock.

The other part of the bathroom has a second sink area, as well as a huge bathtub.

While there is a door that closes between this area and the other part of the bathroom, there is no door between where the bathtub is and the bedroom. There is also a small window above the bathtub with shutters that you can open and close. I guess they think that if you are sharing a bed with someone, you may also want to watch them bathe?

Also kind of strange – this area of the bathroom had the only closet space in the bedroom. There were plenty of drawers, but if you wanted to hang items you had to hang them in the bathroom closet (there was also a coat closet by the entrance to the villa).

Bedroom

The bedroom is quite large, with a king bed and plenty of space. I know the room is designed for a typical family, with two parents and two-three kids. But so many people travel in other groups or don’t have a typical family, that I really feel like two queen beds (or at least a king and other sleeper chair) would be a nice option since you have the room.

There is another door to the balcony from here. There are two end tables, one for each side of the bed.

In terms of storage, you have a dresser (with another TV on top), as well as a smaller bench next to it with some drawers on the bottom.

Hi, Jenn!

In the corner you also have a chair and ottoman. This was quite comfy – since we had a trip with a good bit of downtime, I spent a lot of time in this chair reading or working on my laptop!

Themeing

Old Key West resort, of course, has a Florida Keys theme to it. The room decor follows this trend, with a color palette that is light but still vibrant, without falling into a pale pastel color.

There is a lot of light blue or teal touches in the room, with some accents of a coral or light pink. I really liked the carpet in the living room, but my favorite was the dining room chairs! They are exactly like something I would want for my own home.

There wasn’t much artwork – as far as I can recall the only the real pictures hanging on the wall were a set of 4 coral reef paintings in different colors. The room had lots of windows so there was plenty of natural light (which I prefer!).

One touch I really liked was the lamp in the living room. It’s the same teal blue color but shaped like a lifeguard beach chair. More subtle touches to the themeing like that would be nice!

Other amenities

I used to think I was the type of person who wasn’t going to be doing their laundry on vacation.

I have now become the type of person who sees the appeal of doing their laundry on vacation.

Especially when you are running races, it’s great to be able to wash your clothes before taking them home. I hate having sweaty clothes sit around for a few days, and it’s easy enough to throw in some laundry at night.

Overall thoughts on the Old Key West 1-bedroom villa

Old Key West once again won me over with its laid back vibe and bigger rooms. The 1-bedroom villa was wonderful and a perfect option for sharing with a group of friends. We had 4 adults and it always felt like we had plenty of space (and mirrors!). It wouldn’t always be my first choice of resorts mostly due to the location, but if you wanted to hit up Disney Springs a few times on your trip it’s great! Also worked out wonderfully for a race weekend, with plenty of race transportation available.

I was wondering if this a “preferred” building for a one bedroom, or if you just have to request this building and hope for the best as I know that it is not guaranteed,

Old Key West does offer a room type “near the Hospitality House,” but twice I’ve stayed there and didn’t have that room type booked but still got a room close to the main building! We did request it without having the preferred room booked.
