On board a Disney fireworks cruise for Magic Kingdom’s Happily Ever After

What to expect from a Disney fireworks cruise leaving the Contemporary resort to see Happily Ever After at Magic Kingdom!

Disney fireworks cruise - Disney in your Day

The Magic Kingdom fireworks are truly a magical experience and a key part of most Disney trips. While the best view seems like it would be directly in front of the castle, many people have other favorite locations. Plus, getting that prime spot means camping out for hours and dealing with some pretty intense crowds sometimes.

I’ve seen the fireworks from lots of different places. In addition to the classic Main Street view, I’ve watched from the train station, in Fantasyland behind the castle, from the dessert party seating / viewing area, and even from the Swiss Family Treehouse. But this past trip I got to try a new perspective – viewing Happily Ever After from a Disney fireworks cruise on the Seven Seas Lagoon!

One of the extra experiences that Disney offers to guests to purchase as a signature experience is a Magic Kingdom fireworks cruise. I had the opportunity to do this during my recent travel agent training, and it really was wonderful.

The Basics

Cost: $449 plus taxes and fees

When you can book: 60 days before your trip

How to book: Online or by phone

The Disney fireworks cruise is a private pontoon boat which will hold up to 10 guests. It is a flat fee to rent the boat and get the cruise regardless of the number of people you have, so the more friends you can bring, the better!

The whole experience is about two hours, from meeting at the Contemporary Marina, getting a tour of Bay Lake and some information from the cast member, watching the fireworks and Electrical Water Pageant, and then heading back to the Contemporary.

Bottled water, soft drinks, and pre-packaged snacks (like chips) are available on board. But make sure to use the bathroom before you leave!

Meeting at the Contemporary Resort

We were instructed to meet at the Marina at the Contemporary resort and be ready to leave at 7pm. The boats may leave from other resorts too, but the Contemporary is a big one.

The fireworks that evening were happening at 8:30pm. It seemed quite early to me, but it turns out we took a slow tour around Bay Lake before heading to our fireworks spot, and got some fun info too!

There are a number of boats that can be booked for this tour each evening, so once you check in you’ll be introduced to your guide/captain, who will then lead you to your boat. My understanding is that if you note you’re celebrating something, you may have a special banner on your boat (we saw a “Happy Anniversary” one).

The boats are really nice. There was plenty of space for all of us, and the seats were comfortable. They provided towels, and there was an ice bucket with bottled water and various soft drinks available. A few small tables were set out, as well as a basket of snacks. These included chips, chex mix, and Mickey rice krispie treats!

Once everyone was in and situated, we took off from the Contemporary – this was probably around 7:20pm.

Tour of Bay Lake

We traveled very slowly, and the cast member on our cruise gave us some Disney history, fun facts, and information on the resorts and other things in this area. She pointed out a number of things as we passed them, and even though it was dark she had a flashlight to help show things.

Contemporary Resort at night

For instance, I learned that there is a bat house set up near Fort Wilderness, so if you keep your eye out you are very likely to see some bats in that area. We also passed a tree she called the “Tree-dition,” and told us that the cast members who work in recreation at these resorts have had a tradition for years of throwing a shoe onto the tree.

We also got some history about Discovery Island and River Country. I knew some of this, but there were also a few new tidbits I learned. Our captain was super knowledgeable and did a fantastic job at both being a tour guide and driving the boat.

Watching the fireworks

Around 8:15 we pulled into our spot for the fireworks. You are directly in front of Magic Kingdom, and can even see some of the castle (though the train station is front and center).

The music is piped in to the boat’s speakers, so you can hear the soundtrack perfectly and in sync with the show.

I wasn’t sure what to expect for this view of the fireworks. You’re too far away to really see the castle projections well, and Disney has really leaned into that lately with their shows. But the view turned out to be incredible! I’m not a huge fan of the projections anyway – the fireworks themselves, timed with the music, is what I truly love. I can take or leave the extra stuff.

I honestly think this may have been the best overall experience I’ve had viewing the Magic Kingdom fireworks. You could see all of the fireworks really well. It was the perfect spot – being far away enough to be able to see everything at once, but not so far that you felt like you were only seeing them from a distance.

And it’s so nice to be able to have this view with just your private group, seated comfortably. You’re not crammed in with a million people, blocked by children on shoulders or iphones. And rather than being caught in the crush during the fireworks exit, you get to hang around to watch the next show!

Electrical Water Pageant

Shortly after the Magic Kingdom fireworks end, the Electrical Water Pageant starts. If you’re not familiar with this, it’s a fun show that happens in the evenings, with stops at each of the Magic Kingdom area resorts.

It’s like a small water parade, with 2 large barges that have screens on them which light up and dance in time to music. It has been around for over 50 years, though it’s changed a little throughout the years.

We had a fantastic view for this, as we were right on the water near the boats. It was very cool to see it so close!

Overall thoughts on the Disney fireworks cruise

I absolutely loved doing the Magic Kingdom fireworks cruise – it was even better than I anticipated. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again if I had a group who was interested. The view of the fireworks may have been the best one I’ve experienced, and you also get some neat Disney history and the Electrical Water Pageant view too.

Though it can be a bit expensive, if you have a larger group it actually could work out to be a fairly reasonable “per person” cost, especially compared to some of the other Disney “extra” experiences. You also don’t need theme park admission, so if you have a day you’re not going into the parks it’s a great choice for something to do.

I have no doubt I will do this again sometime (or the Epcot one), whether it’s for a special occasion or split amongst friends.

Happily Ever After

FAQs about the Disney fireworks cruise

Is it hard to book this experience?

Like many things at Disney, it can be competitive to book this one. You should be ready at 60 days out (if you’re a resort guest, that’s 60 days ahead of your check-in date), and keep calling back if you don’t get it (people cancel, or plans change). We were going during a busier season, but still managed to book 3 boats for our group eventually.

Is the Magic Kingdom or Epcot fireworks cruise better?

I have only done the Magic Kingdom one and not Epcot, so I can’t really speak to a personal preference. I loved the Magic Kingdom one, but I’ve heard fantastic things about Epcot too. With the current shows happening, I much prefer Happily Ever After over Luminous, so it’s a no-brainer for me.

With the Epcot cruise, you still get a little “tour” of the area before the show, sailing around Crescent Lake and going past Hollywood Studios. The fireworks viewing spot is at International Gateway, so you are much closer to the show. If projections for either show are a big deal to you, you’ll probably want to do the Epcot cruise. But of course, there’s not Electrical Water Pageant in the Epcot area.

Should you tip your boat captain?

Unlike many cast members at Disney, the captain of your boat is allowed to accept tips. That being said, they are not required or expected, but if you feel they did a great job you are welcome to tip them.

How many people can come on a private fireworks cruise?

Each boat can hold up to 10 guests. If you have more than that, you could opt to book multiple cruises.

Can you hear the music?

Yes – the entire soundtrack for Happily Ever After is played directly over the boat’s speakers, and is timed to be in sync with the show.

Can you see the castle?

Yes, but you can definitely at a distance from it. You can see it from afar, but you’re not really going to see the detailed projections.
