Galaxy's Edge FAQ - Disney in your Day

Having now experienced Galaxy’s Edge and read about many, many other experiences with it, I feel like I can answer a lot of the questions I’ve seen pop up! I had a lot of questions myself before I visited, so I hope this is helpful to you. If you have a question I don’t answer here, just leave it in the comments and I’ll add it to this Galaxy’s Edge FAQ!

General

How are the crowds?

In Disneyland they’re not bad at all. For most of the 4 hours we were there Smuggler’s Run was a 20 minute wait. Once the next reservation group came in it started feeling much more crowded and overwhelming. Even once the reservation period ended crowds didn’t go up like many anticipated. I check the app often and the wait for the Millennium Falcon rarely goes up past an hour, which is low for a new, highly anticipated attraction. Disney World may be a whole different ball game – we’ll have to wait and see.

Will Disney World also do a reservation system?

Right now their answer is no. Given how well the system worked in Disneyland I have to think they’ll come up with some way to handle crowds a little, rather than just letting people in en masse. But they have no plans to do reservations at this time and are relying on “extra extra magic hours.”

Where should I go first?

I think my top answer to this is: whatever you want to do the most. However, if you can wait a little bit to get on the Millennium Falcon the lines are much shorter after the first hour, at least during the reservation period. If you want to build a lightsaber, Savi’s should absolutely be your first stop. Otherwise I’d do the cantina first. If merchandise is your priority do the shops first, because stuff did sell out and they got very crowded.

Is 4 hours enough time in Galaxy’s Edge?

I could have stayed a little longer, but I felt like we got done most of the things that we wanted to do. It would have been nice to have lunch there before we left. We stayed until about 12:30 but we weren’t actively trying to get in anywhere, like trying to ride the Falcon or build a droid.  I think if I had the freedom of time I would have spent 6 hours there and done everything I wanted to do without the stress or pressure of time.

Once the reservation system is over, how much time do you think you should allot for Galaxy’s Edge?

As I just stated, I probably could have spent 6 hours there – but things may be different once the wait times change. I would certainly plan for half a day, or even longer for big Star Wars fans.  Perhaps the best approach would be to plan for multiple days in Galaxy’s Edge rather than trying to do it all at once.

Is Galaxy’s Edge appropriate for all ages? Or just teenagers/adults?

I think Star Wars fans of any age will love Galaxy’s Edge, but there may not be as much to do for little ones. You have to be 38″ to ride the Millennium Falcon, and many youngsters who do fit this height requirement may still find the ride a bit intense. Ride aside, there are some fun snack and food items for kids (the popcorn stand and blue and green milk!). If you’re willing to spend the money, lots of merchandise and the droid building would be great for kids. I don’t know that I would bring young kids who aren’t into Star Wars as there might not be much for them to appreciate, but children who are fans of the series will delight in seeing the Millennium Falcon, interacting with Chewbacca and Rey, and perhaps cuddling a stuffed porg.

If you don’t like Star Wars, what would be the most interesting for non-fans?

I truly don’t think you have to be a fan of Star Wars to appreciate Galaxy’s Edge. Just like I’m not a huge fan of the Avatar movies but love Pandora, you can still feel immersed without knowing all of the details. I think the Millennium Falcon ride would still be a blast even if you knew nothing about Star Wars – at the end of the day you’re piloting a ship through space and trying to shoot the bad guys. The Cantina has super fun and tasty drinks, no context needed. There are some tasty sounding food items too. The only thing I think wouldn’t be appealing for the non-fan is all of the merchandise.

Where can you go if you just want merchandise?

The thing to know about the merchandise at Galaxy’s Edge is that there’s two “types” of merchandise – there’s the stuff that actually says Galaxy’s Edge and the stuff that’s native to the planet of Batuu. When you enter Galaxy’s Edge you aren’t in Disneyland anymore – you’re in Black Spire Outpost. So you’re not going to find a t-shirt that says Galaxy’s Edge. You’re going to find things that residents or visitors to that planet might actually be interested in purchasing. Shops are scattered all throughout the land, with a large concentration of them in the Marketplace area.  If you’re looking for Galaxy’s Edge branded items they were available in many places throughout the park, including Downtown Disney, the shop in Tomorrowland, and Star Wars Launch Bay. I suspect when it opens in Florida Disney World will do the same.

Food and Drink

Does Oga’s Cantina serve the full drink menu all day?

At least right now, yes. They have a breakfast menu with a few morning specific drinks and snacks (like a spiked coffee and a bloody mary), but the full cocktail/beer/wine menu was available at 8am.

Can you get the beer flight without purchasing the $75 souvenir?

Nope. It’s $75 for the rancor teeth set or nothing! The beers were all tasty so if you want a beer I’d go for it. If you want the flight, well – I thought it was worth it to pay the $75 to get the beer and and the souvenir. The flight is currently sold out in Disneyland but they plan to restock, and it will make an appearance in Florida.

What does the blue milk taste like?

Don’t worry, it doesn’t taste like milk! There’s no dairy in it at all. It’s more the consistency of a slushie and it’s sweet and refreshing. It has tropical/citrus flavors that I found to be pleasant and flavorful but not sickly sweet.

Where can I get food in Galaxy’s Edge?

There are a number of options, but your main food location is Docking Bay 7. This location has a small breakfast menu until 10am and then switches over to a variety of entrees for lunch and dinner. Keep in mind that while Oga’s Cantina has a variety of drinks, they don’t really have food (just a snack mix right now). Ronto Roasters is a stand with sausage wraps which were quite tasty. You can also get snacks about the land, including a variety of popcorn flavors at Kat Saka’s Kettle and blue or green milk (which is more like a slushie).

Attractions

Can you choose which job you have on Smuggler’s Run?

You are handed a card that tells you your job. They say that you can trade with someone on your crew, but that means someone has to be willing to trade with you. At least at some point they were honoring requests to wait for a speciic job – the single person on our crew who was supposed to be our engineer really wanted to be a pilot, and he disappeared and joined another crew. I doubt they will always do this though, because it would be too inconvenient.

Is one of the jobs on Smuggler’s Run better than the others?

I think they’re all fun – I tried gunner and pilot and I will admit I thought pilot was pretty cool.  There’s also more to each position than meets the eye. I didn’t try engineer but it seems like they have the most to do with all of the buttons and interactions they need to take care of – especially if your pilots are crashing into things! Gunners can set their controls to either automatic or manual.

Is there fastpass for Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run?

Not yet, but there will be. A fastpass queue exists but it is not currently being used. There is no word on when this will be added.

Can you bring your droid/lightsaber onto rides with you?

The Millennium Falcon has a lot of floor space so there should be no trouble bringing your items onto that ride. Other rides in Disneyland have had mixed reactions. I brought my droid onto Space Mountain but it was very uncomfortable – many others were told they could not bring them onto Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, or Splash Mountain, and bag check areas were provided at those locations. Honestly, once you leave Galaxy’s Edge you don’t want to be carrying all of that around all day, so I’d either rent a locker or go back to the room and drop it off.

When will Rise of the Resistance open?

It will be opening in Disney World in Florida on December 5th, and in Disneyland in California on January 20th.

How bad will my motion sickness be on Millennium Falcon?

This is definitely something that will vary for individuals. I can tell you that in terms of motion sickness, I can get it pretty badly on motion simulator type rides that jerk you around a lot (I can do Star Tours but my stomach isn’t always thrilled afterward). I found Smuggler’s Run to be much more smooth than Star Tours or similar rides.  I personally didn’t have a hint of motion sickness. If you’re very sensitive you might have a problem, but if your motion sensitivity is a little more like mine I think you’ll be okay.
