One of the things I was most excited about when it came to the Dopey Challenge was planning what costumes I was going to wear for each race! I’m a sucker for getting dressed up, so it was fun to plan out 4 different outfits. I ended up going with a Minnie Mouse running costume for the Disney World 5k.
I’d originally thought about this for the 10k, because Minnie used to be featured on the medal for that race, but this year they switched it to Oswald. So I decided to use her costume for the 5k because I wasn’t sure wearing the ear headband would be comfortable for too long – the shortest distance seemed best.
Like most of my running costumes, I don’t necessarily make much by hand but put them together out of bits and pieces I either already have or buy. I think this way of costuming is more accessible for many people who don’t have sewing skills, and cheaper than buying a totally handmade costume from Etsy (though there are some INCREDIBLE options there if you have the money!). I think my costumes still come out pretty well, and are only getting better.
So here’s how I put together my Minnie Mouse running costume!

While it would be easy enough to just wear a black shirt for this costume, I wanted to make it even more specifically Minnie Mouse with a shirt that I got from one of my favorite running stores, RawThreads. It’s still mostly black, but it says “Run Like Minnie Mouse” on it in red polka dot letters. And there is a cute Minnie Mouse logo on the back too!
I added polka dot arm sleeves from Sparkle Athletic as well. I bought them in case it was cold for the race. I probably didn’t need to wear them but since they were fun and it was a bit cooler that morning I wore them anyway.
Bottom
I got a Minnie Mouse skirt from Sparkle Athletic as well. This matched the arm sleeves and was a cute way to complete the look. While there are lots of options for Minnie Mouse inspired running skirts, I liked this one because it has a bit of sparkle to it as well!
One thing I like about these running skirts is that you can basically wear any running bottoms you like underneath – so whatever you normally wear or works for you. You can do shorts or capris/pants if it’s cooler. I used black running capris I have from fabletics but there’s tons of options on Amazon.
Accessories
Of course it’s hard to be Minnie Mouse without the mouse ears, right? I probably would have tried to make a more comfortable headband for a longer race, but for this one I just used my sequined Minnie Mouse ears from Disney. I did put a few bobby pins in to try and make sure it was secure. I also wore my polka dot Bondi Band for a headband.
Though I just wore white compression socks, in retrospect I think it would be fun to do yellow ones to represent Minnie’s shoes!
