I won’t lie, I hate the cold. I’d move to Florida if it wasn’t for my job and my friends and family all being here. So when it comes time to do run training in the winter, it’s tough for me to get out there. I’ll often do my shorter runs during the week at the gym on the treadmill, but for the longer weekend runs I can’t stand being on the treadmill that long. So I have no choice but to bundle up and get out.
In order to stay warm I’ve at least got some good tips after a number of cold winters here in Pennsylvania! Here are my favorite ways to dress when you have to run out in the cold:
Pants
I like a long pair of pants to keep me warm in the cold! The ones that I have are warm and comfortable, but the best part for me is that they have pockets! So I don’t have to wear a belt or anything to carry stuff with me.
Long sleeve shirt
A long sleeve shirt to keep you warm during the winter is a must. I love to have them because they are so versatile – you can wear just the long sleeve shirt when it’s above freezing, and then use it as a base layer with a jacket overtop when it’s below 32 degrees.
My go-to now is the Mizuno Breath Thermo Base Layer Crew. I was curious to see how well it would work when I first tried it on – it feels really lightweight and I wasn’t sure if it would actually keep me warm. But it does an amazing job! It uses their new breath thermo technology, which is specifically designed to generate heat and keep you dry (I’m normally covered in sweat but this did a pretty good job!). Plus it’s so pretty in this gorgeous pink and purple color! I know I’ll get a ton of use out of it for the fall, all through the winter, and the beginning of spring so it’s a great investment.
Jacket
Once it hits around 35 degrees I definitely want a jacket over my long sleeve shirt to keep me warmer. I have a couple of different ones that I really like, and I’ll use various jackets based on how cold it is out there. I have lighter ones and heavier ones.
Gloves
I find that if my hands get cold, all of me feels much colder. That’s why gloves are a must. I have this pair of Mizuno Breath Thermo Warmalite gloves, made from the same stuff that my long sleeve shirt is made of. Not only do they keep my hands nice and warm, they have a touchscreen capable forefinger that actually works! I’ve had other gloves which claimed to be touchscreen capable but it was hit or miss. This one was consistent in working.
Hat
Aside from my fingers, the other main thing I need to keep warm is my head – or specifically, my ears! I always wear a hat if it’s going to be under 50 degrees. I like this style from Bondi Band which also has a cutout hole in the back for ponytail.
There are lots of great things to wear when it’s cold out, and thanks to that I don’t have to make excuses when it comes to running in the cold. Well, I might still try, but I can ultimately get out there and get it done without too much complaining…

How do you keep warm when it’s cold out?
I am not a runner but my son who lives in Alaska is and you seem to dress just as he does. Sometimes he throws on a jacket
I can’t imagine how cold it is running in Alaska!
My hands get cold the quickest. I definitely make sure I have good gloves and I love bondi band headbands, because I can pull them over my ears or not and adjust according to temperature. I layer up when it gets really cold. As long as you have the right gear, I feel like you can run in any kind of weather….all year long!
My hands too, even around the house that’s the first thing to get cold! I have a ton of bondi bands, love them.
These are some great dressing tips for outdoor exercising, not just running! My hands and feet get mega cold, I am a fan of thick socks and fleece gloves!

Very true! It’s good for any movement you’ll be doing outdoors!
I’m not a runner but I want to start jogging soon. Finally got a good pair of running shoes from Nike. I just have to get out there. These are some great tips.
Awesome, a good pair of shoes is the first step! Good luck!
I’m not a runner, but I used to run last winter and I can definitely agree with you! Gloves and a hat are must haves. My dad also lended me those socks that were designed to be used during the winter. My feet tend to get pretty cold, so these were amazing! They kept my feet warm without being super thick.
Oh yes, some good socks are something I need to find! My feet get cold and then if there’s puddles or snow on the ground and it soaks through my shoes it’s pretty miserable.
I only run on the treadmill, simply because Las Vegas is either too cold, too hot, or too windy – there maybe two days in the year where it is just right, lol. However we are planning to move to LA county, so I will be trying your clothes suggestions then, blessings!
Yeah, I can only imagine what it’s like running in Vegas! I think it would be so much harder to convince myself to be a runner there!
Finding a good hat to keep my head warm that won’t fall off is so key!
