Decorating Muppets Easter eggs

A look at how I made my Muppets Easter eggs:

Any excuse to get crafty is good with me, and Easter has always been a time to do some arts and crafts! Ever since I was little, I have good memories of decorating Easter eggs. And since there aren’t really any other kids in my family, I’ve continued doing it ever since.

Back in the day, I would just use store-bought dye. Maybe do a few duo-toned eggs or add some stickers or fun items that came with the packet. But I’ve gotten a little more ambitious now!

I’m sure it’s no surprise that I like to try and come up with a Disney-related twist. I’ve tried different techniques (paint, sharpies, temporary tattoos), and different Disney themes (princesses, Baby Yoda, Orange Bird, Marvel, and more).

I’m not a super-talented artist. I am somewhat decent at working off of an example like a logo or doing a more minimal interpretation of something. I’m not going to be doing any quality detailed portraits, though!

When I was thinking about new egg decorating ideas, the Muppets made perfect sense. First of all, I love the Muppets. Secondly, they are cartoon-ish and exaggerated, so I don’t have to worry about getting all of the details exactly right. Finally, they have pretty distinct colors and looks to help identify them.

There are a lot of Muppets to choose from though! I ultimately created 12 Muppets Easter eggs. I tried to include all the major characters, plus ones that I thought would translate well to the egg form.

In the past year or two, I have discovered an arts and crafts tool that has been huge in many of my projects! I got these paint pens and use them all the time. They claim they can write on almost any surface – and it turns out they worked really well on eggs!

The “main” Muppets

Kermit egg
Miss Piggy egg

Kermit – of course I had to make a Kermit egg, although he’s so angular and lanky he’s not really the best fit on an egg! I started with a green base. I then used my paint pens to add his eyes, mouth, and collar.

Miss Piggy – I first dyed an egg pink, though I didn’t leave it in too long to make sure I would get a very pale pink color. I added the details for her eyes and hair with my paint pens. Once that dried, I used a thin black sharpie to do some outlines.

Fozzie Bear – Fozzie was an easier one to do! I started with an orange egg and gave him a big mouth and simple circles for the nose and eyes. I painted on a hat and eyebrows, then added his ears and outlined the mouth with the thin black sharpie.

Gonzo – This might have been the trickiest one to do, thanks to Gonzo’s nose. A bright blue egg is a good start. Then, I just did my best to draw on his mouth, nose, and eyes. Oh, and add a few lines at the top for his tufts of hair!

Bunsen & Beaker

Bunsen – Bunsen is a very simplistic looking Muppet, which meant there wasn’t a lot of detail to do here. The glasses were key, of course, and the nose.

Beaker – Beaker is also pretty simple, though making sure to take the egg out of the dye early enough to get that light color was important. Then eyes, nose, mouth, and some orange at the top for his hair.

Electric Mayhem

Animal – This one turned out to be my favorite. I just did my best to freehand the main details of his face, and it came out surprisingly well. A lot of lines with the red marker helped give him that “fuzzy” look. I think getting the big eyebrows right was important too – they’re very distinctive.

Dr. Teeth – He’s another Muppet that has a bit more detail, which helps make him more recognizable! Getting the eyelids just right helps. And the gold tooth, of course. He also wears a hat which I did struggle with a bit.

Electric Mayhem eggs

Zoot – I figured if I had Animal and Dr. Teeth, I had to do the rest of the Electric Mayhem! The key to Zoot is getting the sunglasses right.

Floyd – This was another challenging one. He’s also wearing sunglasses, but I’m not sure I got them exactly how I wanted them. And his bushy mustache? Maybe not perfect, but I think it’s at least recognizable!

Janice – I often struggle with drawing lips, but I think Janice turned out okay. Her eyes (or really lack thereof, it’s the eyelids and lashes) are important to get right. Especially those lashes!

Lips – Lips is probably the least well-known of the Muppets here, but he is the last piece of the Electric Mayhem so I chose to do this over the Swedish Chef (my next choice, but I decided to stop at a dozen eggs!). It was tough to replicate his hair, but the rest of his features were pretty easy to draw on.
