Decorating Inside Out easter eggs

A look at how I made my Inside Out easter eggs:

Inside Out Easter eggs - Disney in your Day

I love a chance to do some arts and crafts, but I don’t often have the time for a random project. The holidays are a good excuse for me to do something, and Easter is perfect because decorating eggs is something I’ve been doing with my family since I was young!

I have stepped things up since then, when I used to just get a store-bought kit and dye my eggs different colors. Now, I might still start with a store-bought dye: but I get a little fancier after that. My favorite tool lately is these paint pens – I use them all the time. They claim they can write on almost any surface… and it turns out they worked really well on eggs!

And of course, I’m always coming up Disney themes for my eggs. Some that I’ve done have included princesses, Baby Yoda, Orange Bird, Marvel, and the Muppets.

I pondered a theme for last year, and it was pretty easy to decide on Inside Out easter eggs! The sequel, Inside Out 2, had come out the previous year. Inside Out has always been one of my favorite movies, and with the addition of new emotions it meant we had even more characters to make eggs.

9 Emotions, which meant 9 different easter eggs. And since they are all different colors, it works well when you’re dying the eggs! Definitely good to make most of the colors nice and vibrant.

The original Inside Out characters

The first 5 I started with were our original emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. Joy and Sadness are really the star of the show, of course, but all of the emotions have an important role to play!

Joy – she has a rounder face, so I think Joy worked pretty well on an egg. First I started with a yellow egg, and left it in the dye for a long time so it would be very vivid. I sketched the facial features first and then traced them with my paint pens. I made sure she had a big smile! And yeah, I skipped the nose because I just couldn’t get it to really work. I think it still looks okay.

Sadness – this started with a blue base, and I think the shade of blue is pretty decent. Her face is pretty simple to draw – just a line for the nose and mouth, and big round eyes. I added hair, but the real key is her glasses.

Anger – red can be a hard color to get with easter egg dye (at least the basic, store-bought stuff), so I left this one in for quite a long time! Like most of the emotions, Anger’s expressions are key to getting the character across. A big mouth with the teeth showing and big eyes with small pupils does pretty well.

Fear – This one was a little more tricky since he has a very skinny face. I ended up drawing the outline of his face onto the egg itself, because otherwise I don’t think it would have worked out well. Don’t forget the bowtie!

Disgust – A lighter shade of green is good here. I looked at a number of pictures of disgust to pick out which expression I wanted to use. Getting the mouth right was important, but the shape of the eyes was also a little tricker than I expected. The long eyelashes add a lot.

The new emotions

The sequel introduced us to 4 new emotions for Riley, so they got to be made into Inside Out easter eggs as well!

Anxiety

Anxiety – She’s the main “new” emotion, and also my favorite color. I had a similar challenge here as I did with Fear, so I chose to outline her face directly onto the egg. In this case, I did the outline in a thin black. That’s mostly because I didn’t have an orange paint pen that was quite the right color (I still used the brighter orange I had for her hair, mouth, and eyes though).

Envy – I wanted to make sure she was a different color than Disgust, so I did a very light green. Her big eyes look good on an egg, and adding her rosy cheeks makes her more identifiable.

Ennui – I struggled a little bit with the mouth here, but ultimately I think it came out okay. In order to try to get close to her color, I dyed the egg purple briefly and then quickly dipped it in blue. Her nose and bangs are defining features.

Embarrassment – A nice pink is good here! He is often hiding his face, so there’s a few ways I could have gone with this. I thought about trying to draw on the hoodie and just having part of his face show, but ultimately I found a photo where he’s giving a small smile.
