Breakfast at the Wave

Perhaps ones of the best “hidden gems” at Disney World, breakfast at the Wave is a pretty delicious experience. It’s located in the Contemporary resort just walking distance from Magic Kingdom. People seem to either not know about it or pass it up in favor of other places like Chef Mickey’s in the same building or Ohana/Kona over at the Poly.  But if you haven’t tried breakfast at the Wave and you like food, I think you want to eat here.

The set-up at The Wave is interesting for breakfast, because you can choose if you’d like to pay for the buffet or if you’d like a plated meal. I will admit that the plated meals sound very good, and I’m not a huge eater so I wasn’t sure if the buffet would be worth it. They let us look at the buffet before we decided, and it was one of the best looking breakfast buffets I’ve seen. I wanted to try so many things, so I went with that – as did most of our group.

Jason, who is usually the big eater, wasn’t feeling great that morning so he decided to just get the Avocado Toast (Buttered Brioche Toast, Avocado, Applewood-smoked Bacon, Poached Eggs, and Watercress Salad):

This is a huge piece of avocado toast that he didn’t even finish.  He said it was very good, and it looked great too – I wanted to help him finish it but I was so full from all of the amazing food I got on the buffet!

But now let’s talk about that buffet! There’s a variety of little glass containers filled with fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, and more. I went with some of the fruit and the banana caramel yogurt.

A wide variety of pastries are available, including croissants, cinnamon rolls, danishes, muffins, bagels, etc. If you’re looking for cereal you’ll find that too, but you probably don’t want this buffet for the cereal!

In the cold section there was also ham and cheddar pinwheels, deviled eggs, and smoked salmon. Even though he didn’t get the buffet I snuck Jason a piece of smoked salmon on my plate because I know he likes it so much.

You’ll see lots of your typical hot foods, such as scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, and steel cut oats.  But if you’re looking for more unique egg items, you can also get an eggs benedict with key lime hollandaise or an egg white frittata. I’m a sucker for eggs benedict so I grabbed one of those and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Of course, what buffet is complete without Mickey waffles? Don’t worry, you can find those here as well.  But honestly, it’s the pancakes that I couldn’t get enough of. They feature a sweet potato pancake here that is just out of this world. I went back for seconds, which is saying something when there are so many other great items on the buffet.  You can also get a full sized portion of the sweet potato pancakes as an entree instead of doing the buffet, which certainly wouldn’t be a bad choice.  Rounding out the  hot selections you’ll also find hash browns and grits with bacon and cheddar.

Let’s take a look at my 1st plate! (The second plate was more pancakes and fruit):

By the way, they were also willing to bring us a side of something we might be interested in if we got the buffet and that thing wasn’t on it. So a number of us got a side of french toast as well, and they didn’t charge extra for it.

Yes, the Wave may be slightly out of your way if you’re planning a day at Magic Kingdom, but it’s not so far out of the way that I think it isn’t worth it. If it’s your “once in a lifetime trip we need as much time in MK as possible” trip then you might not want to hop on the monorail for it, but if you don’t mind spending a little extra time for a great meal then I think it’s well worth it.

I have now been to the Wave for breakfast, dinner, and drinks at the Lounge and have enjoyed all of those experiences thoroughly.  The food is always good and since it’s not a super popular spot it feels pretty chill and relaxed. I know I will definitely be back here again!
