Can’t stop, won’t stop… making margaritas! I was excited for my latest margarita experiment, as the blood orange margarita from La Cava del Tequila is my personal favorite. I’m a big fan of everything orange, and especially blood orange flavors. So I knew this blood orange margarita recipe would be happening soon. Sure enough, this is by far my favorite out of all the margaritas I have recreated at home.
The blood orange margarita has a few ingredients that aren’t necessarily your everyday items, so it took me a little more time to prepare and gather everything. The first was a hibiscus simple syrup. I couldn’t find it anywhere near me and while you can order it online, it’s pretty pricey when I only needed a bit. However, I figured out a way to make it myself using this recipe from Whole Foods! It was actually very easy to do using hibiscus tea bags and turned out really well. I’m excited to figure out what other flavored syrups I can make now!
The other somewhat tricky thing to come by was arguably the most important part of the recipe (well, besides the tequila!) – the blood orange juice. You’re typically not going to find a carton of blood orange juice like you would with regular juice, so I ended up buying some blood oranges and squeezing them myself to get the juice. They had blood oranges at my grocery store and 3 oranges gave me enough juice for 2 margaritas.
I had also purchased a blood orange soda they had just as a back-up plan, in case I didn’t get enough juice out of the oranges I bought. I didn’t need to use it but it still was tasty! I suppose you could also make this with regular orange juice, though of course you’d be missing the more tart, less sweet blood orange taste.
Ingredients:
- 1 oz of triple sec
- 1.5 oz tequila
- 3/4 cup blood orange juice
- 3/8 cup hibiscus syrup
- tajin (for rim)
Directions: Rim glass with tajin seasoning. Add all other ingredients to a shaker with ice, shake well and pour into glass. Enjoy!
