When it comes to Halloween I don’t have many traditions because the fall tends to be such a crazy time of year for me. There are only two things I really think I do consistently every year: attend my friend Kristin’s Halloween party and paint a Disney pumpkin. This year I did an Aladdin pumpkin!
I’m not a huge fan of carving so I decided to paint instead, and I’ve been doing it on plastic pumpkins so I can keep them around in the future. Every year I add a new one to the collection – and of course every pumpkin I’ve done is Disney themed! You can see the ones I’ve done in past years here:
- Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Princess and the Frog, and Tangled pumpkins
- Inside Out pumpkin
- Frozen pumpkin
- Orange Bird pumpkin
It was difficult for me to decide which movie to do this year! I’ve already done all of my favorites. I thought about doing Peter Pan, since the silhouettes would work so well with them flying by Big Ben. But I carved a Tinkerbell pumpkin a few years ago and that felt pretty similar. Moana and Pocahontas crossed my mind, but ultimately I picked another 90’s classic: Aladdin.
I always paint my pumpkins with silhouettes, because I am not really an artist and I definitely can’t do detail work. So most of what I paint is black, but I try to incorporate color where I can to add some detail. This time I added a little blue to the genie and yellow/gold for the lamp.
I don’t trace anything, I do all of it freehand. First I find an image online, then do a pencil outline of what I what I want on the pumpkin, and then paint it in. I always do the movie’s title logo on the back as well. This one might have come out a liiiitle crooked, but it’s not terrible!
What do you think of my Aladdin pumpkin? Any ideas for which movie I should tackle next year?
