Kona Cafe - Disney in your Day

Welcome to this month’s Blogorail Green Loop. Today we are sharing some of the best breakfast spots at Disney.

One of the breakfasts at Disney World that I probably hear the most about is Kona Cafe, at the Polynesian resort.  In various Disney foodie groups and through diehard Disney friends I’d long heard about this great breakfast, but only got the chance to check it out for myself for the first time this past summer.

On my Disney girls trip we decided to make Kona Cafe one of our breakfast stops.  One of my friends is a huge fan of the Polynesian and had eaten there before and highly recommended it, and I was excited to try it!  To get there from Pop Century we took a bus to the Magic Kingdom and then hopped on a monorail over to the Poly.

Kona Cafe is on the second floor of the Polynesian in an open space.  I thought it was a very pretty restaurant and I loved the big windows and openness of it, especially for breakfast.  It felt bright and cheery.

We started with the french press Kona coffee.  We got one for the 3 of us to share (it has about 3 cups in it) and then ended up ordering a second one later in the meal.  It’s really excellent coffee, some of the best you’ll find on Disney property.  If you’re a big coffee drinker this is a must try.  And if you’re a casual coffee drinker but happen to be getting breakfast at Kona, definitely go for some of the coffee.

For my meal I had to go for the famous Tonga Toast.  It was one of those things I’d heard so much about on Disney forums and facebook groups.  Tonga Toast is Banana-stuffed Sourdough French Toast rolled in Cinnamon Sugar and served with a Strawberry Compote and your choice of Ham, Bacon, or Sausage.

And it was everything I’d heard and hoped it would be.  It was absolutely delicious, especially with the strawberry compote added.  And very filling.  The bacon on the side of the plate just looked kind of sad, but this dish is really about the french toast.  I ate the bacon just to get a little protein.

My friends decided to split two plates so they could get a taste of a little bit more (I did not want to share any of my tonga toast).  They ordered their own tonga toast and then had the two eggs any style (with Home-fried Potatoes and your choice of Ham, Bacon, or Sausage).

This is a good option if you’re just looking for a basic breakfast platter.  I also really liked their idea of splitting the two plates, especially if you didn’t want to eat an entire plate of sugar and carbs for breakfast (not a problem for me).

I really enjoyed Kona Cafe and I have to say that I had high expectations going in, so it lived up to them for me.  I would absolutely love to come back here again for breakfast (and check out lunch or dinner sometime!).  The real question is, would I order the Tonga Toast again or spring for the macadamia pineapple pancakes?

Have you been to Kona Cafe?  Which dish looks most appealing to you?
