Do you have any fun Halloween plans this weekend? If you’re just hanging out around the house, consider popping on one of these popular Disney movies that would be fitting for Halloween. Whether they take place around Halloween or just have a little bit of a spooky atmosphere, these Disney Halloween movies are perfect for this time of year. And the best thing for kids (and scaredy cats like me!) is that they aren’t horror movies or too frightening, so they’re great family films.
This cult classic from the 90’s has been popular with my generation for awhile, but it seems to be gaining even more popularity in recent years. It takes place in Salem, MA, and follows a trio of witches who are accidentally resurrected and plot to suck out the souls of all the children in town. Though it might sound creepy, it’s often silly and has some fun music as well.
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
This movie is really two smaller films, and Ichabod is the Halloween themed one – but while you’re at it you might as well watch Mr. Toad! Disney’s story is based on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and includes ghost stories and the fabled Headless Horseman.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Is it a Christmas movie? Is it a Halloween movie? It can really work for either one, as Jack Skellington comes from Halloween town, where Halloween is celebrated all year round. He then stumbles into Christmas Town and tries to bring Christmas back to his own town. This dark stop-motion animated Tim Burton film has a great score by Danny Elfman.
Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie
I will admit that I’ve never seen this movie, but I absolutely love Winnie the Pooh and couldn’t get enough of his movies when I was growing up. Even Disney Halloween movies can be a little scary for younger kids, so Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween movie is a great option for the younger ones.
Another one from the 90’s, Halloweentown was a Disney Channel Original Movie. A teenager finds out that she’s a witch and travels to Halloweentown, where there’s all sorts of magical creatures and challenges to take care of.
The Disney Villains have always been associated with Halloween, so of course their descendants might be appropriate for the holiday as well. It’s a cute story about the children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar, and Cruella as they search to discover their own identities. Kids who like the villains will want to watch this one.
Into the Woods
It’s not really Halloween related, but I think it fits with the overall darkish vibe of the holiday. The stage musical is one of my favorite musicals of all time, and I was really happy when Disney turned it into a movie. It involves many different fairy tale characters who have to go into the woods to get their wishes come true, but sometimes their “happy ending” isn’t quite what they expected.
While there are plenty of other spooky Disney movies (like the Haunted Mansion movie) or ones that relate to Halloween, these were the titles that stood out to me as the best for the season. I may have to give Into the Woods a re-watch sometime soon as it’s probably my favorite on this list!
