Kill, Refurb, Marry: Songs from Disney Animated Films

Last updated August 13, 2014 by Becky 5 Comments

There are so many Disney songs. Seriously. How am I supposed to pick just one to marry, one to kill, and one to refurb?  Heck, even picking a whole soundtrack for this will be difficult!  I’m sure there will be ones that I’ve forgotten about, and I’ll read what others have done and say, “Oh yeah, I forgot about that!”  But these are the ones that come to my mind.

Kill: Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

big bad wolf

There aren’t really many Disney songs that come on where I go, “Ugh, I wish this would stop.”  I’m sure there are some that I’m not remembering, but since I don’t like them I don’t listen to them!  However, this one came to mind because it’s on one of the Disney collection CDs I have.  It’s cute and all with the short, but the song on its own?  No thanks.  It’s just annoying and one of those songs that gets stuck in your head all day!

Refurb:  Go the Distance

go the distance

I know, I know.  There are so many people that love this song.  And it’s a nice song, but for me it’s just a bit… boring.  It starts off really slow, and while it does swell toward the end, it doesn’t do enough for me.  I tried having it on my running playlist for a little while but it didn’t actually encourage me to go the distance.  To me it’s like a not as good version of Out There from the Hunchback of Notre Dame.  Maybe if you threw in a bigger key change, or did something to spice it up a little more, I would have a better appreciation of it.

Marry: Can You Feel the Love Tonight?

canyou

This is one of the most beautiful Disney love songs.  Whether it’s the lyrics from the film or the Elton John version, I just love listening to it.  And the message that it sends is just as beautiful as the melody: “Can you feel the love tonight / the peace the evening brings / the world, for once, in perfect harmony / with all its living things”.  And then you throw in Timon and Pumbaa in the beginning and the end, and you’ve not only got a beautiful love song, you’ve got comedy too!  It doesn’t get much better than that.

Good idea for a Kill, Refurb, Marry! If I did this, I’d only choose songs from the full-length films in the Disney Canon, so ‘Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf’ wouldn’t be in the consideration for me as it’s from an animated short.

For me, I’d kill ‘Why Should I Worry?’. It annoys the heck out of me. I’d also refurb ‘Go the Distance’ and agree with you totally on what you said about it. I’d marry my fave Disney song, ‘Be Our Guest’.

I love Go The Distance, but you’re totally totally right! It really does need a little something …

Kill: Hellfire from Hunchback. It’s not like the song sounds bad or anything, but… it gets stuck in my head for at least a week every time I watch the movie (and that’s not an exaggeration!)

Refurb: In a World of My Own from Alice in Wonderland. She’s juuuuust enough off key that it’s a little frustrating.

Marry: Let it Go from Frozen. I could listen to Idina on repeat for hours.

Good choices! I know some people are sick of Let it Go, but I love it!

Another kill: Following the Leader from Peter Pan. I love that movie, but the entire soundtrack is lacking (particularly that song. *shudder*)
